The campaign activities by the
Republican wives often include
their children as well as husbands.
The Prices with their three children-
-ages 10, 14 and 17--recently made
a four-day tour of 45 northwest
Oklahoma cities and towns. Mrs.
Price prefers to let her husband do
the talking, saying she made her
first speech "on my own" only last
week at a GOP rally in McAlester.
Both Mary Price and Ann Hargis
have been active in past campaigns
as volunteers for other GOP candi-
dates. The informal coffee circuit
keeps the candidate wives moving
over the state. In one week last
month, Mrs. Hargis logged 1,600
miles in northeastern counties, av-
eraging four coffees or other events
per day. The two Hargis children,
teenagers, often are along to help.
Patti Orza, mother of two, ages
5 and 7, says if her husband be-
comes governor she will put major
emphasis on family and children's
needs. As a group, the women list
economic growth, better law en-
forcement, tourism, educational and
environmental causes as priorities.
Mrs. Brown says her agenda
matches her husband‘s--"he‘s the
leader in our home.”
As was indicated in last week's
report describing wifely chores on
behalf of Democratic candidates,
woman's work is never done-in the
1990 campaigns. However, none of
the Republican wives who were in-
terviewed has had as much vote-
seeking experience as the spouses
of Democrat candidates David
Walters, Wes Watkins and Steve
Lewis.
Mrs. Rhonda Walters shared her
husband's victories in the 1986
Democratic primaries, but they lost
the final round to Shirley and Henry
Bellmon. Mrs. Lou Watkins has

felt powerless in the face of the

I am writing in response to a
recent article "HB 1017 Still Div-

which appeared in another

I am a member of the STOP
taxes group and am proud of it. I
have believed for a long time
that people should have more
voice in their government. I can-
not believe some of the state-
ments that Rep. Denver Talley
made.
In the article, he stated he
voted against HB 1017. What he
did not say was that he voted
“yes" for the bill when they had
the emergency clause, thus try-
ing to straddle the fence on the
issue.
Also, I cannot believe that a
representative who is supposed
to work for the people, would be
against letting the people vote on
tax issues. Wasn't the Con
stitution supposed to be set up on
the idea of a government “by the
people and for the people ” ?
If you read the amendment ar-
ticle that is being circulated by
the STOP taxes group you will
find out that legislators can still
pass tax bills if three-fourths of
both houses approve it. But what
will change is the fact that a tax
increase cannot become effec-
tive until ample time is allowed
for a referedum vote of the
people. In other words there can
be no more “emergency clause”
taxes enacted immediately on us
as was done with HB 1017.
What this amendment will do
is force our representatives and
legislators to find alternative
methods to solve their problems
