DALLAS (UPI) — Common
sense told Kevin Howe and his
partners they could sell their
product that cost them only $4 to
make at $70 apiece and still
make a handsome profit, while
their rivals were selling the
same at $3,000 apiece.
So Howe is not surprised his
DAC Software, Inc., which pro-
duces and markets accounting
softwares, has been able to
achieve a phenomenal 10 to 15
percent per month growth in the
one year it has been in business.

partner and four Mexicans foun-
ded with only about $300,000, is

debt and “90 percent owned by
us," Howe said.
Howe said he met his Mexican
partners, all of them trained ac-
countants and businessmen. five
years ago during a business trip
for his publishing company and
discovered they were writing
softwares “far superior to any-
thing I had known."
"I had no idea then we would
go into business. We first got
started in mini computers but
gave that up and got into micro
computers." said the 37-year-old
Howe, DAC’s president who has
a masters degree in business
administration.
"Jose (Hurtado. DAC’s
chairman), who is a CPA, had a
unique capability to write superb
softwares but he, his brother and
two of his brothers-in-law with
whom he was in business were
selling less than 1,000 packages a
year in Mexico.
After we decided to go into
business, we raised $135,000 of
outside money to launch it and
for the rest we practically mort-
gaged ourselves for a $150,000
bank loan. But by the time we
went to the market with our first
software, we had wasted all that
bank loan.
"As it worked out, we didn’t
need the remaining $130,000 be-
cause in the very first month we
had sales of $200,000, all of that
cash up front. We didn’t know at
the time it would be so suc-
cessful. I resigned my job in the
publishing company as vice
president of marketing that was
paying me a handsome salary . ”

/ m thinking of taking up walking, but I’m not
sura how to go about it."
“We decided we could sell our
products real cheap and help
these businesses to computerize
So really we didn’t have to take
business away from our com-
petitors but only go after new
business."
DAC’s pricing strategy forced
others to reduce their prices but
DAC remained the leader be-
cause “they could not get down
below $150 whereas we could still
sell in the $70 range because we
had the volume.”
Next month, DAC will market
four new accounting packages,
all of them priced under $40
each.
