was in Chickasha on Wed
nesday trying to locate old
pictures of the original Grady
Khrushchev from power in
1964 and divided his posts and
prestige tietween them
Kosygin. who was the only
Soviet head of government
not to be forced out of office
by a purge or to die in office,
became the Soviet Union's
eighth premier the nominal
head of the government
At first he was more visible
than Brezhnev, but Brezhnev
who turned 74 today
inherited Khrushchev's
chairmanship of the Com
munist Party. and quickly
used that status to reduce
Kosygin's role in the day to
day running of the nation
Along with Kosygin and
Brezhnev, Nikolai Podgorny
was given the ceremonial
title of president in 1965. but
was dumped in 1977. and
Brezhnev assumed that job as
well
Kosygin visited the United
States in 1967. meeting in
Glassboro, New Jersey with
President Lyndon Johnson to
lay the groundwork for
strategic arms talk, later to
be a key component of
detente But at home, he was
eastern Montana through
central Wisconsin and into
upper Michigan Readings in

of state highway, killing both

State police said the
collision late Thursday,
between a flat bed truck and a
refrigerated vehicle, oc-
curred when the truck driven
by Arthur Joe Roberts, 30. of
Dothan, Ala. crossed the
center line of Louisiana 1
about 15 miles south of
Shreveport
Roberts died in the crash,
along with Jerry W Hewes,
32. of Apache. Okla. the
driver of the other 18-
wheeler
Hewes' wife. Ann, a
passenger when the trucks
collided, was listed in fair

body would lie in state for two
or three days at a Moscow
army installation and then be
cremated, as are most Soviet
leaders
At the time Kosygin asked
to be relieved of his duties
because of his health, he had
not been seen in public since
Aug. 3, the end of the Moscow
Olympic Games, and well
informed sources said he had
suffered at least two heart
attacks in the past year
Kosygin and Brezhnev led
the triumverate that ousted
"There has been
widespread speculation and
press reports concerning my
being asked to join the
Reagan administration as
secretary of housing and
urban development or other
posts," Sanchez said
