DEAR DR BLAKER
You were generally correct in
your advice to the parents of
the severely retarded boy who
wanted to reduce the time
they spent visiting him in the
hospital and attending to his
needs.
But after 30 years of work-
ing with the retarded in state
hospitals, I must say that
some of your advice was
wrong.
For example, never send
money if your child is in that
kind of hospital The patient
very seldom gets the benefits.
I’ve seen thousands of peo-
ple send in $10 or $20 at a
lime for their children or
other loved ones. The cashier
or whoever handles the money
makes a few strokes of the
pen, and the child gets only $1
or $2.
Neither is it a good idea to
send food because the employ-
ees usually eat it.
I only stopped doing that
because one day I saw a fami-
ly give all they had to buy
their son a soft drink and
some candy. I was so ashamed
that I gave them money to get
home
If you send clothes, be sure
they are all marked well with
washable ink I've seen
employees’ children wearing
clothing meant for patients
DEAR READER - Thank
you for your letter. Isn’t it ter-
ribly sad if what you say is
true?
DEAR DR. BLAKER - My
husband and I have been mar-
ried for five years and have
three daughters. But we can’t
talk to each other
When I am with my friends
and family I talk and talk and
never stop. But with him I am
silent.
What subjects should I
bring up? What is my prob-
lem?

WASHINGTON (UPI) -
Although major earthquakes
east of the Mississippi are
rare, the discovery of a fault
in Arkansas that caused the
worst earthquake in U.S
history raises questions about
when the next big one will
strike the East.
U.S. Geological Survey
scientists blame the newly-
discovered fault in the
northwest corner of Arkansas
for a series of three
earthquakes that violently
altered the land surface over
a wide area in Arkansas,
Missouri, Tennessee and
Kentucky in 1811 and 1812
"Forests were flattened,
large areas of land sank and
rapids formed in the
Mississippi River, which was
even said to run upstream for
a while," said Dr. Robert
Wesson of the Survey.
