Like ‘Home’
By THOMAS G. BELDEN
UPI Science Writer
HOUSTON (UPI) - The
engineers who designed the
Skylab space station to be a
"home away from home" for
nine different men can be well
pleased with their work.
With only a few gripes—like
some of the soap "smells like
dog shampoo”—all three Skylab
crews have generally been
pleased with their ability to live
with as much ease and comfort
in weightlessness as they have.
Officials of the space agency
have gotten as full a descrip-
tion as possible from all the
crewmen—while the men were
in orbit—on how good a home
the ship is, to aid in the design
of spacecraft of the future.
One of the major successes of
America’s first effort at build-
ing a space station was the
design of the lab’s walls, floors,
ceilings and doors to look like
they do on earth.
Anchor Themselves
Another major engineering
success of the eight-room, 100-
ton orbiting house was the
triangular grid pattern of the
floors and ceilings. By wearing
special shoes with a twistable,
triangular plate on the bottom,
the men could anchor them-
selves anywhere by simply
slipping their foot into the
floor's gridwork and giving it a
half-turn.
“I think the idea of the
triangle grid is great," Skylab 3
scientist Edward G. Gibson
said. "The whole place ought to
be made out of it."
Gibson, suggested, though,
that he would have preferred a
solid backing with a pleasant,
soft color to it behind the
triangular gridwork, to avoid
“having the whole place look
like a maze.” |
In lengthy tape recorded
discussions, Gibson and fellow
crewmen Gerald P. Carr and
William R. Pogue all agreed
many of the creature comforts
one takes for granted at home I
had also been provided aboard I
Skylab. I
The lights, the air condi- I
tioning, the bathroom, storage |
lockers and the shower—the I
first ever flown in space—work |
fine. What few complaints there |
are center on small items, I
according to the men’s com- I
ments. I
Dog Shampoo I
“I find the shower to be very, I
very nice, although I think the I
soap is lousy," groused Carr. I
“There's got to be a better way I
than to give us stuff that smells I
like dog shampoo.” I
Pogue complained that “I I
wouldn't want the people who I
designed this i dining room) I
table to do anything else... I
because all they'd do is make a I
bigger and better white ele- I
phant." He specifically said the I
restraining devices needed to I
combat weightlessness while I
eating were inadequate. fl
Gibson and Carr both sug- l
gested the tiny little cell-like I
bedrooms each man has could I
have been bigger, and they E
would have liked a little writing I
desk or at least a flat, I
moveable shelf that would have •
sufficed as a desk. •
And Carr revealed that if the B
spacecraft gets a little too H
warm at night, there's enough H
flexibility in the papoose-like E
bag in which they hang from •
the bedroom wall to sleep. •
"In very hot weather I leave B
the top blanket rolled up and B
put it under my head rack and B
I sleep in the nude," he said. •
