Friends Sisters and Brothers —
This is the first meeting of its
kind ever held by the American
Negro The Annual State meet-
ing f the Patriarchs of Ameri-
ca an organization for Negroes
having for its purpose the
oloniation of the Negroes
if America the establishing of a
tradition for the Negroes the
protection of Negro womenhood
and a combination of efforts for
the encouragement and estab-
lishment of plans and enterpris-
es for the promotion of the peace
rd general prosperity of the
egro race
May peace and harmony pre-
a I throughout our proceedings
My friends ours is a feeling
of peace and good will to all man-
kind and if we will be guided by
our motto:

Nearer than we think is our star
w w ill in peace accomplish by
persistant zeal through the aid
of christainity what other races
have gained for themselves by
merciless war their rights and
part of the earth for their domin-
ion where they have been able to
exercise the rights and privi-
leges of citizenship
Viewing the situation of the
races here in America the dis-
tinct racial lines the barrier
against emalganmtion of the
af-res (the only m ans of elim-
nating castes and racial feelings) v
the various organizations that
are being established by other
classes of American citizens to
protect their special inteVest
(and from which the Negro is
precluded) and viewing in the
distance actual strife and its bit-
terness that are finding birth
in the financial and political fields
of our Qountry: then returning
to the situation of the Negro
race without prejudice we find
it impossible for him even with
ability and merit to succeed be-
yond a limit because of combin-
ed influences that meditate
against him on account of his
racial connections because his
bounds are fixed in a manner as
no other American citizen
We appreciate in the highest
degree the great christain in-
fluences that holds in check a
strong racial feelings for our
hurt that has been fanned into
a flame by fiendish acts of a Ne-
gro criminal and maintains law
and order we deplore and con-
demn crime and stand ready to
assist in the prosecution of all
criminals and wre encourage
our people through this organi-
zation to give whatever aid they
can to the officers of the law to
bring criminals to justice
However notwithstanding the
great christain influences that
hold power over all classes of
American citizenship to main-
tain justice to do the right and
reward where justice demands
notwithstanding the enlight-
enment of the Negro his pro-
gress in weaith and businesslex-
perience the avenues to success
are actually closing against
him and having reached these
facts through a careful summing
up of the situation w-e set about
with christain spirit to offer a
plan for the solution of the prob-
lem believing our method sound
and fair to all and trust to be
able through it to awaken in the
minds of the American people
such an interest in our cause as
will win for us their encourage-
ment and co-operation in putting
this plan into effect
Infutherance of these plans
w-e have assembled here today
with full authority vested in us
as members of the Patriarchs of
America and legally elected del-
egates to assemble at this time
and place for the purpose to elect
grand officers for the state of
Oklahoma and a representative
and endow him with full authori-
ty of this organization to appear
before the congress of the Unit-
ed States and before the legisla-
tures of any state or the execu-
tive of the nation or of any state
in behalf of the Negroes in any
matter for their citizenship and
colonization
