THE NEGRO QUESTION
Continued
The principals relative to the
previous handling of the Negro
question and of their segrega-
tion in some Territory of the
United states Various courses
have been resorted to as the
means of evading the question
of granting to the Negro those
rights most essential to true cit-
izenship liberty and an untram-
melled persuit of happiness
Any course that seeks to
eliminate these rights is but
a breeder of dissention and but
forms a foundation for conten-
tion to build upon however re-
mote that contention be from
the people oppressed
A diversity of causes led to
the civil war every base of
which was slavery and as proof
of this fact we call your atten
tion to some of the historical
causes
The strife between the politi-
cal parties at the close of the
Kansas episode had grown to
such tension that their sup-
porters were seeking advantages
through every resource of the
government As a matter of
protection to their contentions
the Dred Scott case was so ar-
ranged as to bring out every
feature of the question of slav-
ery that was likely to come up
regarding the rights of such
property and the decision in that
case brouhgt forth from its en-
emies a storm of indignation and
determination that slavery
should bs wiped from the statu-
tes of our country and from
its friends applause and a deter-
mination to protect and enlarg-
es the t rritcry for slave holding
This only served to ripen the
minds of the great American citi-
Kinship for the coming campaign
of 1 HOO which was the begining
of the great civil war that cost
this government the lives of
thousands of its citiztns who
were cutoff from the enjoyment
of tiie rights and priveleges of
I American citizenship and the
pleasures of their loved ones at
home and billions cf dollars in
money for its expense and repa-
ration It arrayed father a-
gainst son brother against broth-
er divided the household yea
even the church of the living God
Let the good meaning people
of this country remember the
blood of their fathers the pray-
ers and tears of their aged moth-
t rs as a result of the careless
manner in which the Negro ques-
tion has been disposed of in the
past and be better able to control
it in the future by removing the
cause in a fair and satisfactory
manner by segregating the
Negro
