A statewide survey is being made of places
where whirlpool baths and hot tubs are in use fol-
lowing reports of possible brain damage to unborn
infants.
State and Oklahoma City-County health officers
have been cautioned by the U.S. Consumer Prod-
uct Safety Commission that fetal brain damage
may occur during the first three months of preg-
nancy where water temperatures exceed 102 de-
grees.
The commission advises pregnant women to
avoid such baths where the temperature exceeds
100 degrees.
Alberta Harmon, staff member with the Oklaho-
ma State Department of Health's consumer prod-
uct safety division, said no such damage has been
reported so far in Oklahoma.
She said state health officials have been ad-
vised that temperatures, even for healthy adults,
should never exceed 104 degrees. She said the U.S.
commission also has advised that temperatures
as high as 106 degrees could produce heat stroke
in healthy adults.
Tommy White, environmental health director
with the Oklahoma City-County Health Depart-
ment, said his department is conducting a survey
in Oklahoma City but results are not yet avail-
able.
He said his staff also is surveying places where
ultraviolet tanning programs are offered.
White said inspections are being made to deter-
mine that light tubes are shielded in the event of
accidental bulb breakage and signs are displayed
cautioning consumers that looking directly into
the rays may cause eye damage.
