symbols for Christ.
Who are the FISH?
“We are simply a group
of Christians who need to
express our love and con-
cern for other people. This
is our way to say, ‘Thank
you, God,’ ” Father Howell
said.
“FISH members give no
lectures, receive no pay,
and get no merit badges,”
he said.
Father Howell said when
the idea for FISH was pre-
sented to his congregation
during Lent of 1964, the
people reacted in various
ways.
“MANY WERE enthu-
siastic; others felt inade-
quate; some wanted to
serve but work schedules
conflicted; some offered
themselves for any service

Throughout the activities
of the nonprofit, nondenomi-
national organization, empha-
sis if placed in loyalty to
one's own church. This has
been the case since Don
McClanen conceived the idea
of the FCA seven years after
he gave a talk on “Making
My Vocation Christian” in
1947 when he was a sopho-
more at Oklahoma A&M Col-
lege.
In 1954, McClanen formed
an Oklahoma FCA group,
and two years later the first
annual national conference
was held in Estes Park,
Colo., attended by 240 ath-
letes.
This year six conferences
were held at resorts in var-
ious parts of the country,
with more than 4,000 coaches
and athletes participating.
Next year eight are plan-

money with suppers and

required to stand up before

and actually witness in

“WE ALL THINK about
it. We all pray about it.
But in order to emerge
from that shadowy state of
half-commitment, we need
specific outlets to help us
show forth the substance of
faith in our lives,” he said.
Father Howell said the
really serious people in
churches are being dis-
couraged by the “dead-
weight” of people who
have forgotten the
church’s true mission.
To many, “church work”
is simply activities carried
out within the church’s
walls, he said.
Father Howell said Okla-
homa City’s FISH group is
distinctive in two ways.
“You are beginning with
the largest number of vol-
unteers (160) of any group
I know of in the country,”
he said.

The FCA reaches high
school athletes through
arid brotherhood.
Ethics and moral behavior
art being thus encouraged
by Protestants and Roman
Catholics working together
through the fellowship,
which wa formed by an ath-
lete and now has chapters
across the country.
The organization carries
out its program largely
through local meetings of
cqaches and athletes,
speeches by sports heroes,
and summer conferences
that blend camping, games,
meditation and old-fashioned
boil sessions.
