The woman standing be-
fore Judge Phillip Lam-
bert Wednesday morning
was accused of driving un-
der the influence of alco-
hol. Her defense was the
Bible.
The Bible, she said, is
full of references to drink-
ing alcoholic beverages.
Alcohol in itself is not
wrong, the judge retaliat-
ed.
No Favorites
"But if John the Baptist
was driving under the in-
fluence in Oklahoma
City,” he said, "so help
me, he'd be arrested and
put in jail.”
The woman was fined
$30. It could have been
more.
The woman was one of
the first defendants to ap-
pear in Judge Lambert’s
municipal court of records
since an ordinance passed
Tuesday raised maximum
fines for some offenses to
$100 and-or 90 days in jail.
He’s Satisfied
The ordinance deals with
some offenses related to
alcohol, juveniles and
prostitution and provides
stiffer penalties for some
traffic violations.
"Of course I’m happy
about them because I was
the one who introduced
them.” Lambert said.
He pushed for the ordi-
nance for two reasons, he
said.
Too Weak
First, he felt the old or-
dinance which set maxi-
mum fines at $20 was too
weak to discourage viola-
tions.
Second, he said, he is
particularly interested in
reducing offenses in-
volving juveniles.
"Sometimes a kid ar-
rested would collect the
fine money from his
friends, and his parents
would never know about
it,” he said.
"But now I’ve got some-
thing I can talk turkey
with.”
Education Key
With the threat of a $100
fine and the possibility of
three months of
cell-sitting hanging over
heir heads, Judge Lam-
nert hopes troublesome
youngsters will begin to
tpe the line. And he hopes
parents will, too.
• He said he hopes to set
up some kind of program
Go educate youngsters
Ibout the dangers of alco-
Hol. He said he has found
ghat liquor or beer is con-
hected in some way with
most juvenile offenses in
Oklahoma City.
; Presently he conducts
Weekly meetings for alco-
holics, and he said he is
considering having youths
convicted of alcohol-relat-
id offenses sit in on some
Ct these meetings so they
Can see for themselves
what alcohol can do to a
person.-3____________
