BIRMINGHAM, Ala
(UPI) — Trial of three libel
suits totaling $1 2 million be-
gins Wednesday against the
New York Times in federal
court here.
The suits were brought by
three former Birmingham
city ofcials — Eugene
“Bull” Connor, ex-police
commissioner; J. T. “Jab-
bo” Waggoner, former com-
missioner; and ex-mayor
James Morgan
Each sued for $400,000.
U. S District Court Judge
H. H Grooms was to hear
the cases, consolidated by
him for the trial.
The former officials said
Times reporter Harrison Sal-
isbury — now assistant man-
aging editor of the news-
paper — wrote two articles
with intent to defame them.
The articles were called
"Fear and Hatred Grip Bir-
