between themselves and
their mothers.”
Trousdale has practic-

Some women ex-
perience difficulty in
identifying their sexuality
as a result of changing
role models and the im-
ages their mothers pre-
sent, Norman
psychologist Jean
Trousdale said in a talk
before the OU Women’s
CaucusThursday.
“A not infrequent im-
age that comes to mind of
the little girl role model-
ing is the four or five-
year-old dressed up in her
mother’s long dress, high
heels, lipstick all over her
face and jewelry: she is
practising being a
mother,” Trousdale
said. "Little girls playing
with dolls are practicing
being mothers.”
‘‘Interestingly, you
rarely see little girls get-
ting all dressed up in
slinky gowns practicing
being wife. They don’t
see their mothers that
way. Mothers tend to
present themselves
relatively sexless:
mothers, not as wives,”
she said.
The daughter’s sex-
uality and the mother’s
sexuality, being of the
same nature, can cause
anxiety on the part of the
mother. An ambivalent
situation exists which
may very well strain their
relationship.
‘‘Mother’s
about having a girl,
about the daughter's sex-
uality and her own sex-
uality become very clear
to the daughter,” she
said.
Al 18 years of age, the
daughter may be en-
couraged to leave home
to lessen the am-
bivalence, she said. The
daughter may begin
dating seriously and may
also entertain thoughts of
having her own children.
Foremost in her mind is
the idea that she is very
different from her
mother.
Should the daughter
get married before hav-
ing resolved her feelings
toward her mother, the
ambivalence may be
directed to her husband,
Trousdale said. “Some
of us experience a great
