newspaperman who attended the Uni-
versity of Oklahoma school of journal-
ism is on leave from his position in the
Little Rock bureau of the Associated
Press while in service in the navy He
joined the navy in April After leaving
Oklahoma in 1929 he worked on the
Fort Smith Times-Record and South-
west American Pine Bluff Daily Graph-
ic Clarksdale (Miss) Register and
Starkville (Miss) Weekly Star He has
been with the A P at Little Rock since
1935
Edward D Burks city editor of the
Tulsa World writes that Seaman
Clarence Mantooth was formerly as-
sistant sports editor of the World in-
stead of the Tribune as stated in Sooner

was reporter for the Seminole Producer
in 1940 joining the AP in 1941 He
entered the army in January 1942 He
has been stationed at Camp McCain

Giles E Miller publisher of the Pan-
handle News-Herald Guymon seems
to be crossing his fingers in the hope
that the army will not take two of his
printers and threaten the future exis-
tence of 'the paper He quoted an( edi-
torial written by I D Divine publisher
of the Texhoma Times in which he
stated that he was sorry for the errors
that appeared in the Times but that
the readers would just have to charge
the mistakes up to Hitler Tojo or Mussolini

College Paper Contest
Winning two first places two second
places and one fourth place the Cam-
pus Oklahoma City university student
newspaper won high honors in the
senior college newspaper contest
results of which were announced last
week by the technical journalism de-
partment of Oklahoma A and M col-
lege Other entries placed as follows: Hay-
maker Phillips university five second
places and a fourth place Southwestern
Southwestern Institute of Technology
two firsts three third places and a fourth
place Southeastern Southeastern State
college two third places two fourth
places and a fifth place Vista Central
State college two firsts one third place
and three fifth places
In the junior college newspaper con-
test top honors went to the Cameron
Collegian Cameron school of agricul-
ture with three firsts and a second The
Bacone Indian Bacone junior college
was in second place with one first two
second' places and a third place The
Maverick Northern Oklahoma junior
college won a second pace and two
third places while the Aggielite Mur-
ray school of agriculture won two third
places and one fourth place

Reporter Writes On
What Yank Thinks
Lieut Jack Stamper former staff
member of the Anadarko Daily News
wrote a special story from a Ninth air
force troop carrier base in England May
14 entitled “What Does a Yank Think
About Going Over — He’s Too Busy ”
The story has appeared in many state
papers recently Stamper remarked in
his articlea that “One big reason why
the American soldier is the champ in
any man’s war is an unquenchable
spirit which like the versatile chame-
leon changes instinctively to meet any
exigency”
A former student in journalism at the
University of Oklahoma Stamper work-
ed for Tulia Amarillo and Fort Worth
Tex papers before he became reporter
for the Clinton Daily News in 1940
He was named news editor of the Ana-
darko Daily News in 1941 resigning
in December of that year to enter the
the army
Hugo Daily News Instals
U P Teletype Service
Installation of a United Press tele-
type in the Hugo Daily News was
completed on May 22 The News has
been a subscriber to U P service since
1915 and this additional service will
give readers a more complete coverage
of world news The public was invited
to visit the plant and watch the new
equipment in operation

United Press in southeastern Okla-
