Martin suffers through
pain despite good season
.The best season of Mark
Martin's career has been filled with
misery.
His father was killed in a plane
crash, his bad back has been so
painful that he even thought about
suicide and his bid for the Winston
Cup championship came up short
once again.
After twice losing out to Dale

Earnhardt during The Intimidator's
heyday, Martin’s best performance
wasn't good enough to beat Jeff
Gordon.
After wondering if his days as a
winning driver were over when he
went without a victory in 1996, and
after seeing almost his entire team
change before this season, Martin
isn't feeling sorry for himself.
"It has been the greatest year of
my life,” he said. "I just hope that
I'm as blessed next year as I have

If Eric Moore doesn't
want to face criticism,
he can go to a smaller
school.
Tuesday’s outburst by Eric
Moore is understandable.
Moore is a fifth-year senior. He
has gone through three head
coaches,
four offen-
sive coordi-
nators, two
position
changes
and most of
all, a lot of
public
scrutiny.
Who didn’t
feel sympa-
thy for Moore when he talked
about all the negative articles
written about him?
Moore and his fellow seniors
thought they would be winners
when they came to OU. Instead,
all they have been given is broken
promises and losing seasons.
“You all got to understand, we
are students first,” Moore said.
“We got to come here for an edu-
cation. Plus, on top of that, we
have to practice, we got to study

wake up at 6 o’clock in the morn-
ing trying to go practice. Then on
top of that, we got to come out
here and play our hardest for
75,000 people and then you all
are going to boo us?”
And Moore is right; we don’t
know what it’s like being college
football players, and none of us
know what it is like to be Eric
Moore. In a perfect world, no one
would send hate mail to college
players, some of whom are still
teenagers.
But does Moore know what it’s
like being an average student?
Bryan Does he know what it’s like work-
Dean ing two jobs and going thousands

education?
Moore and his fellow players
are given scholarships and other
academic advantages that aver-
age students don’t get. The price
for these advantages is taking
criticism and working hard on the
football field.
That is not to say that football
players don’t have a tough job —
no one likes to be criticized. And
when criticism gets personal, it
can go too far. But players have to
make sacrifices because of the

ty. Players have to accept the boos
with the cheers.
Moore asked what right the
media and the public have to crit-
icize Blake and the OU players.
The public has the right to criti-
cize, because their support has
made playing football for OU a
privilege.
OU football is a product, and
the public consumes that product.
That income is what pays for
Moore’s scholarship, Blake’s
salary and the facilities in which
OU plays. If the players or Blake
want to say our criticism is wrong
or unfounded, they can. But when
they say we don’t have the right
to criticize, they are wrong.
■ Criticism comes with the terri-
j tory at OU. After last week’s Iowa
State game, defensive coordinator
J Rex Ryan said coaches and play-
( ers should expect criticism.
