ADMINISTRATION REPORTER
Although OU President Richard Van Horn said
in a memo that a number of faculty, staff and stu-
dents have requested the university’s recognition of
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, some employees may
not support the idea.
Mike Newkham, chairman of the Employee Exec-
utive Council, i— - -----
King, employees would be required to take an addi-
tional day of paid leave.
Newkham said there is some concern that em-
ployees, especially new c —
leave time if they took another day off.
He said judging from the employees he has spo-
ken with, most favor maintaining the current aca-
demic calendar.

Firefighters looking into
faulty smoke detectors
WASHINGTON - Firefighters in 14 cities, including Oklahoma
City and Tulsa, will be collecting smoke detectors that failed to work
during fires for a nationwide study on problems with the devices, the
Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Monday.
Statistics show that detectors have failed to alert occupants in about
one-third of fires in houses equipped with them
Officials want to know whether that’s because of design flaws or
because residents disable the detectors or fail to install batteries.
When fire strikes a home in any one of the participating cities,
firefighters will remove smoke detectors that didn’t function and give
residents new devices being donated for the project by manufacturers.
The malfunctioning detector will be tested locally, and if necessary
sent to Consumer Product Safety Commission laboratories for further
investigation.
