Dr. Laura Schlessinger, syndicated radio talk show host,
has gone from arrogance to self-appointed victim, following
recent racial comments that included free-wheeling use of
the "N Word" while talking with a black woman, who was
trying to explain her resentment of racist attitudes displayed I
bv white associates
In fact, Schlessinger said she is shutting down her 30-
year-old radio program at the end of the year so she can get
her "First Amendment rights" back Her announcement on
CNN's "Larry King Live" came |ust a week after her use of
the "the N Word" while talking to the caller who wanted to
discuss her interracial marriage
Schlessinger told King, "My contract is up tor my radio
show at the end ot the year and I have made the decision not
to do radio anymore "
"The reason is I want to regain my First Amendment
rights," she told King, according to E! Online. "I want to be
able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I
think is helpful and useful without anybody getting angry,
some special interest group deciding this is the time to si-
lence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors
I'm sort of done with that."
She's not retiring or quitting, she said, but rather hopes
to be stronger and freer to say the things that 1 believe need
to be said for people in this country
Schlessinger ' ’ had issued an apology thed.n after her
\ w u, >nd iaid on her website August II th.it she
was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt
to make a philosophical point
"I articulated the N-word all the way out ■ more than
one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening
of her radio show that she that she posted on her site "And
that was wrong I'll say it again - that was wrong
She said she "realized that I had made a horrible mis-
take and was so upset I could not finish the show Sch-
lessinger said she did not use the "N-word" to describe the
caller At one point in the exchange, she did tell the caller not
toNAACP her
Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end
of the hour ...
Corinne Baldassano, an executive with Schlessinger s
production company, lake on the Day LLC, said the talk
show host plans to pursue opportunities through her web-
site, books, podcasts and a You Tube channel.
At least two national sponsors of her radio program,
General Motors (. o and Motel 6, owned by Accor SA, have
pulled out of the show heard on nearly 200 stations, Baidas-
sono said
Before she made the announcement, at least one adver-
tiser was prompted to review its status as sponsor of the
show. Shelley Whittaker, a spokesperson for Advance Auto
Parts, said the company was investigating the comments and
would review them before deciding to continue with its ad-
vertising through a national media buy.
During the exchange on the August 10 program, Sch
lessinger said the woman who called herself |ade was too
sensitive fui complaining that her husband s friends made
racist comments about her in their home
SchltMinger, according to her website, is a best selling
author of II adult books and four children's books, which
range from the- provocative "The Proper Care & Feeding of
Husbands" to the c hildren s book "Why Do You Love’
She desc nbes herself as a supporter of children and fam
ily values, writes a monthly column for NewsMax, and posts
a daily blog and weekly YouTube videos
Schlessinger’s doctoral degree is in physiology, accord-
