If you are traveling in the St Louis area and if you should see a
colorful billboard sign at the comer of Highway 70 and Burch,
you should know it’s the artistic work of 10-year-old Nigerian
KARYLNATTA OREDUGHE, because it says so in huge letters.
A fourth-grader, KARYLNATTA was one of five winners in the
1994 art project sponsored by 3M National Advertising, KSDK .
news channel and St Louis Art Museum in conjunction with the ,
St. Louis Public Schools. From 500-plus entries, kindergarten i
through fifth grade, there were five winners. They were4
interviewed on a NBC Channel 5, each was given a $100 savings1
bond, art lessons at the Art Museum and were guests of the mayor
of St. Louis for the presentations. KARYLNATTA is the daughter l
of MR. and MRS. OMEDELE OREDUGHE and granddaughter,
of former Tulsan PRISCILLA MARINA COLE.

MAYME SWINDALL has many positive personality traits but a
couple appear to leap out and take center stage. One, she loves
people. The other, she is a “doer,” not an inactive silent partner in
friendship nor the game of life. She is a talented decorator,
seamstress, organizer, conversationalist and, most of all, a cook
who exudes an enviable self-confidence when preparing for on1
entertaining friends in her home. These loved ones come in aff
shapes, sizes, colors, ages, nationalities and religious persuasions'
They reside in towns, villages and metropolitan cities-’
representative of most of our 52 states. SWINDALL is a member,
of Greater St. John A.M.E. Church where she teaches Sunda^
school and responds to frequent requests to bake cookies for
various church functions. She is well-traveled and has cooked for
the families of some of our nationally and internationally known
entrepreneurs. According to her own admission, she has “never
been without a job when she needed or wanted one.” Friends did
not forget her Feb. 28 birthday. Rather, they showered her with,
beautiful, unique greeting cards and gifts, each indicative of being,
selected with a special kind of love and care. As we sat in the,
living room of her neat, comfortable brick home (and days later\
the postman arrived with boxes of belated birthday cheer and a
stack of cards. The phone rang constantly. The doorbell rang and a
visitor handed her a container of pet food for her four cats. Those
who know SWINDALL best have labeled her gleaming white’
kitchen, the "museum,” a special name for a room with many ,
unusual ornaments and some articles with utilitarian qualities, all
gifts from loved ones. One greeting card read, in part, “To
someone who’s got it all! Beauty, charm, brains and personality."
We add, she not only has it all but she gives it all. Moreover, we
agree that no one leaves SWINDALL house empty-handed. This
writer left with lace cookies (SWINDALL’S own recipe) and
other edible treats and the mailman reminded her that he would
return at day’s end to pick up his special bag. Small wonder she is
loved by those near and far.
