He also said that the remaks a attributed to Griffith at the
Weseca Lion's Club “are coarse, callous and insulting to the Black ‘
citizens of Minnesota, and for that matter, to other minorities and
other decent people within the state.’’ He also said that he "did
not like ‘there’s nobody-here-but-us-white-folks-tone’ of the Lions
Club talk in which Griffith criticized individual players - Black
and white - and said be had ‘moved the team from Washington to
Minnesota because you've got good hard-working white people
here* Obviously, he simply hired Blacks and other ballplayers
because they make money for him", criticized Richares." Fine.
He doesn’t have to love them; but disparaging remarks on a class
of people, that’s uncalled for..
But in that early season dispute Carew didn't criticize Griffith
as extensively as he did on the final day of the 1978 season.
During Carew's stormy early years of his career, Griffith stuck
by him, and Carew said he was “grateful for that,” and he made a
point to thank Griffith when the Twins All Star first baseman won
the league’s Most Valuable Player Award last year. (Jim Rice of
Boston will win in this year; Pittsburgh’s Dave Parker will win in
the National League).
In the third year of a three year contract, Carew has an option
year left next season.
Carew had some tempestuous early years with the Twins, and
he sort of mellowed as the years rolled by....But early this season
he became digusted with the Twins and threatened never to sign
with them. However., he recanted after Mike Marshall, a relief
pitcher, was signed by Griffith who wears two hats as owner-
general manager of the club.

about it. And, he knows when it la

“You line up and the tight end
will cheat over a bit and lean
toward you,” said Arkansas' senior
defensive tackle from Little Rock
(Central). “Tulsa doable teamed
me almost every play last weak.
“You have to live with it and not
get upset," Walker said. “You
have to change your technique a lot
so the offensive lino won’t know
what you’re going to do.”
Even though Walker, a
unanimous all-Southwest Conference
selection a year ago, had bean
blocked repeatedly by two men, the
6-0, 230-pounder has II unassisted
tackles, ten assists, a pass
deflection, and has caused a fumble
over three games. He has seven
sacks for 66 yards In enemy tosses.
As those figures indicate, Walker

"Defensive tackle is an excellent
seat from which to watch the
game,” Walker said. “My key is
the guard and the tackle. About 10
per cent of the time they will lead
me to the play, unless it is
misdirection.
“Of course, the run te the hardest
to play because the line is chopping
on almost every play. You have to
play that practically the same way
every time.
"But on the pass block, you can
switch up, change directions and
after the technique to get to the
passer. I enjoy that part,” Walker
grinned.
His efforts don’t have other
coaches grinning, though. "You

It was supposed to be a happy day for the Minnesota Twins Rod

and Sunday, October 1, was also his 33rd birthday.
But it was not a good day for Carew as he declared he never
would play again for the Twins.

“I will never sign another contract with this organization,” said
Carew after the season finale Sunday “I don’t care how much
mraey or how many options Calvin Griffith offers me. 1 definitely
will not be back next year."
-Carew *as steaming with anger about Twins’ owner Cal
Griffith s statement as the Waseca Lions Club Thursday, Sept. 28
(Waseca is about 40 miles south of SL Paul, Minneapolis in
Minnesota, a town of about 7,000) saying that Carew was “a damn
fool for playing for his current salary of 1170,000 because he’s
worth a lot more than that.”
Griffith later claimed that his statements at the Lions Club were
misunderstood.
Manager Gene Mauch held Carew out of the last game of the
season, which they lost to Kansas City 1-0.
“I will not come back and play for a bigot”, Carew said in
angry tone, as he put on his Twins’ uniform for the finale. "I’m
not going to be another nigger on his plantation.”
Carew’s outspokenness shocked his teammates.
Referring to a character in the TV drama "Roots” Carew said
"The days of Kunta Kinte are over....For Calvin to have the
audacity to look around the room to see if there are any Blacks,
and then start denigrating Blacks, that’s how much guts he’s got.”
According to the reports, Griffith looked arouna the room for
Blacks before he made his racist remarks.
“I hope somebody will get wind of this and they drag him
down,” Carew said, who continued saying he would like to “send a
copy of the remarks to the Minnesota Human Rights Commission
and the NAACP, whose executive director Sam Richardson of
Minneapolis was also very upset about Griffith’s remarks about
the ball players, especially the Blacks.
“What business is it of his,” Carew continued in his tirade of
Griffith “What a guy wants to do with his personal life? If a
guy wants to get married, he gets married I don’t even want to
talk to Calvin. If I pass him in a hallway, I won’t even look at
him How does he expect these players to respect the thing
across their chest - Twins -- when it’s coming from the top that
he doesn’t care about the players.”

Only offensive holding can take
the fun out of pass rushing for
Walker.
“Holding?” Walker laughed. “It
goes on, especially on pass
blocking. I don’t think it has been
as flagrant this year as it was at
times last year. I remember one
team which had an effective double
team. When the play started, the
tackle and the tight end would lock
arms and fall on top of me. That
can take you out of tek play.
"Dan Hampton (Arkansas' right
defensive tackle) and I will keep
each other aware of any unusual
developments like that. Between
plays we will communicate,
especially if something works for
the other team.
“Chances are, if a play works to
his side, they will come back and
try it on my side,” Walker said.
Despite Walker’s destructive
nature on the field, his career goals
involve helping his fellow man. A
Nevertheless, at this season’s end Carew’s attitude of respect
for Griffith is gone, claiming that “Griffith respects nobody and
he expects nobody to respect him,” Carew said, spitting on the
carpeted locker room floor....“Spit on Calvin Griffith,” he said
through clenched teeth.
"One thing of Cal Griffith,” said NAACP’s Richardson in a
phone interview “Inasmuch as he only came to Minnesota
since he heard there were only 15,000 Blacks here, and since that
number has more than doubled, perhaps its time he considered a
franchise in Montana or Utah where Blacks are few and far
between.

tinued.... but they fill up a wrestling ring and put up a chant that
will scare you to death. We came here because you’re good, hard-

The hard-drinking Griffith (he's known to imbibe in the ignorant
oil) wasn’t through, as he continued to berate his ball players
such as Butch Wynegar, whom Griffith said "should take ad-
vantage of free love rather than getting married, and hurting his
performance.”

Season Opens
OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma’s
waterfowl season got off the
launching pad Saturday (October 7)
with hunting open on blue and
snow geese amid conflicting
prospects for the season opener,
according
Department
servation.
Migratory Bird Coordinator Lem
Due said geese normally migrate
through eastern Oklahoma the first
week of October. However, reports
from northern state sources indicate
movement has not occurred.
Due noted early flights of blue
and show geese reach Oklahoma’s
eastern portion, occasionally staying
for a few days, but just as often
traveling through. Goose hunters
generally work river sandbars -
mud flats on large reservoirs for
early season arrivals.
A reliable source in Tulsa said a
small flock of geese passed through
about two weeks ago, and there
was another report of ap-
proximately 50 blue and snow geese
on the ground east of Lake
Eufaula.
Reports from Fort Gibson Lake
and Sequoyah National Waterfowl
Refuge, however, are of snow and
blue geese not being sighted on or
near these popular early season
stopping sites.
