The Tulsa Coalition for Parenting
Education has been formed by 22
agencies and organizations to make
our community aware of the problems
and needs of parents. We would also
like to help parents deal with these
needs through education. We are
planning a seminar. "Parenthood:
Stop. Look. Listen, Learn - and Love”,
to help accomplish these goals. The
seminar will feature Dr. I^e Salk,
noted child psychologist and author,
and will be held April 20-21, at the Tulsa
County Area Vocational School.
To make sure that this seminar
reflects our community’s own unique
needs, we are holding area meetings in
each of the Tulsa High Schools during
the last two weeks in February We
want you to come and share your
personal views and concerns about
child rearing and being a parent in
today's world. This information will be

Out of almost 7.000 Peace Corps

nations for two years or longer, some 50
are from Oklahoma.

Oklahomans of all ages. 20 percent of

than half of all respondents are
married, and about 17 percent of these
have one child. Almost one-third of the

rate of speed in which it is completed.
The popularity of aerobics is great on
ihe ORU campus. Harld Ray, Student
Association President, said recently,
"The hub of student activity at ORU is
the Aerobics Center. If you are looking
for someone or looking for something to
do. the Aerobics Center is the place to
go." The center is open daily from 6
a.m. to 1:30 a.m. and can ac-
commodate more than 1,000 studt its at
any one time
Dr. Brynteson reports field test
results for the 1976-77 academic year
showed 95 percent of ORU men
students and 65 percent of women were
in good to excellent cardiorespiratory
condition according th Dr. Cooper’s
standards. The Human Performance
Laboratory. together with ORU’s
School of Medicine staff, have begun a
longitudinal research study: "The
Influence of Physical Activity and
Fitness on CHD Risk Factors "
The average number of points per
week for students during 1977 was 42
for men and 34 for women, sub-
stantially above Cooper’s standard of
30 and 24 respectively.
Brynteson also reports that many
University graduates continue to be
active in aerobics. "Because of the
wide variety of activities, the discipline
of aerobic exercise can become part of
a practical life-style for our
graduates.” he says.
“Aerobics is a key to physical
wholeness.” stressed Dr Hamilton
when asked about the significance of
aerobics at Oral Roberts University.
“We believe that God created man
whole and that Jesus' greatest desire
was to make man whole again We
know that the quest for wholeness takes
a great deal of discipline, but we
believe strongly in the result: reaching
our potential as human beings. The
concept of wholeness is the foundation
of ORU. It is a part of the Code of
Honor which each student affirms
when enrolling in the University.
Wholeness is our goal."

hope to develop from this seminar,

percent through the newspapers, ac-
cording to a recent survey of almost 500
metropolitan Oklahoma City residents,
which was conducted to determine the
attitudes of Oklahomans toward Peace
Corps and VISTA service
less than ten percent of the
respondents hear about the two AC-
TION programs through their friends.
The study also indicates that about
three percent of Oklahomans know
more about the Peace Corps than
VISTA while still in high school.
Only 12 percent of all respondents
have never heard about VISTA, but
almost all are aware of the Peace
Corps
The survey was prepared by the
Oklahoma Department of Economic
and Community Affairs (DECA) and
was coordinated by the State Office of
Volunteerism
Almost 93 percent of those questioned
said they have never applied for either
Peace Corps or VISTA services, but
close to a Quarter of them would con-
sider joining one of the programs.
The studv found that the Oklahomans
between the ages of 21 and 30 are the
ones most likely to consider becoming
volunteers. 35 percent of them with the
Peace Corps and almost 42 percent
with VISTA. Nine percent of those over
60 are also favorably disposed toward
the Peace Corps.
