COMPOST YOUR
AUTUMN LE.UF.S
It’s important to keep
all the leaves rakqd from
your lawn or they will
smother your green grass
crop and seriously impair
its appearance for next
spring. But. oh whal to
do with the leaves9 Or-
ganic recycling is an ex-
cellent solution.
About three parts dry
leaves to one part green
matter (grass clippings,
lawn weeds, vegetable
waste from the kitchen or
flower garden tops) is
the best recipe Clear a
patch of level land and
spread out a six-inch deep
layer of leaves On top of
this, put a thin layer of
pullings from the flower
or vegetable garden-an-
nuals are just about at
the right stage now for
this. Layer on another
six-inch spread of the
leaves and add a one-
inch layer of green matter
on top of this. Follow thia
formula to make the pile
about five feet high and
weight the top to prevent
loss on windy days. If
the weather is dry, be
sure to wet down the
whole pile to keep it moist
from time to time.
A compost pile thus
constructed generates its
own heat and begins to
decompose pretty quickly.
Decomposition is on-
going until the first
frost. In spring, it begins
again and continues
throughout the summer.
By the end of summer, it
is ready for use--a good
organic fertilizer you have
created yourself.
