I would like to begin by commend
mg Doniel Rah for the aspects of his
column that addressed the conversion
of toe late Cassie BemaH Going
through toe early years of her life must
have been extremely chaotic The fad
that she was able to fmd her Lord and
Savior Jesus Chnst is truly remarkable
Satly, the column disintegrates as it
approaches its end While the validity
of various religions is far too great a
godfess sods destined to rot m a fiery
pit cannot be further from the truth I
am proud to say I am a liberal and I

Additionally Rah heaps praise on

while pointing Al Gore as a person
with no religion whatsoever This is

Ihc answers will always remain subteitive
Vt the maturity ot Americans will favor a sure

Bush has nearly skirted the stem cell issue
because the truth is that science, not religion,
will win this war
Ala*, the press is so consumed with the pres
idential campaign and candidate slip ups that
the public is often unaware of the issues ot sub
stance which could have real impact on pev
pie s lives
Stem cells are so powerful because when
taken from embryos thes can form ans kind ot
cell in the bodv l"hts tact is little known out-
side the medical community.
Though thes are also found in adult bone
marrow, scientists do not find adult stem cells
as promising as the ones tound in embrvos
Isen Republican Senator Arlen Specter has
bypassed his parts platform and called stem
cell technology a "veritable fountain ot vouch"
and the "future ot medical research Specter
has proposed a bill that would fund researchers
to derive their own stem cells through cloning
Ihough cloning your own cells to cure
yourself might seem ethically disputable, the
rumors ot genetic mutants and reprogramming
disseminated after the cloning ot Dolly the
sheep in 1997 are tar-tetched
I he British are also attempting to dissuade
popular belief, and are currently debating a
proposal that would allow human embrvos to
be cloned tor their stem cells
The government should fund stem cell
research that meets certain ethical guidelines in
order to promote scientific research tor the
public good
Additionally, federally funded programs are
better supervised and less likely to become
involved in illegal private marketing Aborted
tetuses should be used tor research, as swell as
all the discarded embrvos tmm in vitro fertil-
ization
No profits should ever be made on the har-
vesting of embryos. Instead, research on
human embrvos should be subfect to the same
guidelines as research on human organs

Oklahoma Daily
Opinio 11
Monday, Sept. 2S, 2000
Human embryonic stem cells can be used to
regenerate nerve cells and allow those who are
paralyzed to walk again There can be little
doubt that the benefits ot abortion and in vitro
fertilization outweigh the procedures supposed
moral depravity.
Yet George W Bush continues to appease
his fundamentalist religious constituency with
a firm promise to keep stem cell research out ot
the federal budget
"We could have made tremendous progress
in getting these cells toward clinical application
it federal funding had been available
remarked Dr John < .earhart a stem cell
researcher at )ohns Hopkins University
But since the 1980s. when Ronald Reagan
placed a ban on the use ot federal funds tor
research on human embryos, scientists have
had to relv on small amounts of private money
to conduct limited research Now as the
potential tor cures rises, and patient advocacy-
groups are becoming increasingly vocal, the
National Institute ot Health and the Clinton
.Administration have submitted to Congress
guidelines under which embryonic research
would be permitted
On Sept 14. scientists, actors and
activists testified to the Senate subcomnut
tee on labor Health and Human Semces.
and Education in the hope that this life-
saving research will no longer be curtailed bv
insufficient funding
Anti abortion advocates continue to plav
the bioethics card, however, even though cur-
ing childhood diabetes is more ethical than
preserving the embrvunic cells of what some
believe to be a viable baby.
Nevertheless pro liters disapprove ot the
recent Clinton initiative "As deeply concerned
as we are about the treatment and cure of dis
ease, we don't believe the average American
wants to see tmv embryonic boss and girls, lit-
tle children used as experimental material."
said Judie Brown, spokeswoman for the
.American Lite league and a staunch Bush sup-
porter
The abortion opponents not only retuse to
allow research on aborted fetuses, claiming
government is providing a “rationale" for abor
tion. they also oppose the harvesting of stem
cells from discarded frozen embryos that can
no longer be implanted into a uterus
