reports
A recent Afghan ar-

guerrillas from Paktia

Kabul showed signs of
being organized and co-

under way around Gor-

capital, also seems to
be under Soviet direc-

The intelligence re-
ports do not show any
involvement of Soviet
combat troops, howev-

believed to have limit-
ed its role so far to ad-
vice, direction and
some technical aid, in-
cluding operating such
advanced weapons as
helicopter gunships
that have played a crit-
ical role in defeating
guerrilla forces.

DEAR DR. JOHN-
SON: Would you please
write something about
a very old problem —
bunions? I can't find
any information on
bunions. What causes
them? Is surgery the
only way to eliminate
them? Can they be re-
moved. or at least min-
imized, without sur-
gery? — M. G., Newark,
Del.
DEAR M. Gu First,
It's necessary to define
what a bunion is, since
the word is used some-
what loosely.
The problem of
bunions arises when
the big toes begin to
point outward rather
than straight ahead.
When this happens, the
area along the middle
surface — where the
toe joins the major por-
tion of the foot — is put
under increased pres-
sure.
An increase in bone
growth occurs in the
joint area. Overlying
soft tissue (a so-called
bursa or sac) develops.
A bunion, then, is that
large growth of bone
and soft tissue that de-

Now to your specific
questions. Bunions are.

ing tight-fitting shoes.
In areas of the world
where shoes aren't
widely worn, bunions
are almost unheard of.
The bunion problem is
obviously aggravated If
you wear narrow, point-
ed shoes — which is
why women have
bunions more often
than men.
In many instances
bunions are mostly a
cosmetic problem; they
just don't look very
nice. Indeed, even
though they look bad,
they may not really feel
bad. On the othar fcwwd,
they can iohmmUms

the White House, "We cannot afford

But Quello recently voted against
the three television networks for
their refusal to sell time to Presi-

candidacy for re-election. The vote
was 4-3. He voted the same way
Wednesday when the matter came
up for reconsideration
Athough he criticized the iaw that
requires networks to give presiden-

air time, Quello said it was the
FCCs “job to enforce it." He added:
“It's a very close call for me.”

WASHINGTON - Federal Com-

James H. Quello is trying to mobil-
ise the Italian-American community
to help him keep his job.
Nevertheless, the White House al-
ready has begun the search for a
Hispanic to replace Quello for the
Democratic FCC vacancy when his
term expires next June.
One contender administration of-
ficials have interviewed for the job
is Felix Frank Gutierrez, an associ-
ate professor of journalism at the
University of Southern California.
The White House has received
about two dozen letters from con-
gressmen, mostly of Italian descent,
in support of Quello.
The letter-writing campaign ap-
pears to have been prompted by a
request from Jack Valenti, presi-
dent of the Motion Picture Associa-
tion of America, to members of the
Italian-American congressional del-
egation. In a letter dated Nov. 12,
Valenti noted, "It is becoming clear
that James Quello, the first and only
italo-American to serve on the FCC,
is about to be dumped, and someone
appointed in his place. This would
be shameful action, given the acar-
