Aimiilii 'J In reports the H klp-
iuvl tin epidemic originating on
tlu- rn- tv i reaching Okla-
fcinu l:i- is true ue might or-
dinarily vi--et several hundred rase
among siiidcnts of the I’niversiiy of
Oklahoma 'lihin the next few wkl
We atv alivady having a moderate
epidemic of rcap-ratiiry inflation
such as we usually have once or
twice a yror
It U possible to limit somewhat the
spread of an epidemic and to reduce
very materially its seriousness es-
pecially in limiting tlir more serious
complications To do tills will re-
quire a very high degree of earm-st
intelligent cooperation
Influenza and cold are due to a
filterable virus which usually in-
vades the respiratory tract producing
the symptoms with which we are all
familiar The virus from such a
case may be carried to other people
by the hands by Improperly steril-
ized eating utensils and by droplet
of saliva which are carried in mod-
erate abundance for a distance of
five or six feet in talking sneezing
or coughing '
f
('olds and inflnrnxa are much less
serious than such condition as pneu
monia unuMt'-o and middle ear
trouble often seen a eolvpitc-tions
Thc-e complications atv usually the
rvul: of iKicvriul infection which
fo'low us a r fmv f the damage in
foe mucous incmlirane of the respir-
atory tract from the virus of colds
or of influcnzi '
A very dry hot item may lie dry-
mg to tin1 nasal seeretiei and by de-
hydrating l he cells of the mucous
membrane may contribute to such'
inflations I'nusuat chilling of the
is sty especially cold wet feet and
lack of sufficient rest may also lower
the resistance and produce susepti-
blliiy to infections
I suggest the following precantions
for the purpose of limiting the ser-
iousness of these infections and to
lessen tlie danger of such an epi-
I
demic: '
KIP ST the rules of good personal
hygiene should be carefully observed
at this time This means getting
plenty of rest keeping the feet dry
keeping comfortably and evenly
warm having the rooms at a com-
fortahle temperature and the air
properly humidified staying away
from people with these infections
and keeping the hands away from
the mouth and carefully washing
thrm with soap and water before
eating
SECOND all dishes should be
sterilized Food handlers should wash1
their hands well with soap and water
before serving food and should cer-
fiiiniv have a sultiu:c if suffer’:-:
witu a hmI huiucrza or a s--rv
thnut
Till i:is persons having these In-
fectians should stay away from other
people not orly to avoid spreading
tlie inis imertions to other ptvpic
hut to avoid getting such Uietciia as
sin puxotci aril pneumonia g- rirs
from oilier anl perhaps healthy peo-
jile In this way serious complica-
tions may often lie prevented
Come to tlie dl-peiisaiv early in
these conditions A good general rule
to follow is “If you fed it go to lied"
Ill c rase of students i—pccially
those away from home this prefer-
ably will mean going to the Infirmary
