At 4 p.m. Tuesday
Oklahoma County traf-
fic will begin using a
new $33 million super-
highway featuring
many of the latest road
safety devices.
* To be opened by the
-state highway depart-
ment will be the new
1-240, west bypass
stretching from SW 74
to NW 39, R. A. Ward,
highway director, said.
Dedication ceremonies
will be at 2 p.m. north
of the road's intersec-
tion with 1-40.
Almost six years
were required to con-
struct the highway that
required acquisition of
448.5 acres of right of
way at a cort <if_g.L
million and a road with
an overall construction
cost of $33,107,975.
Ward said the high-
way will contain sever-
al safety features in-
cluding lateral grooves
cut in the highway sur-
facing to provide runoff
channels for water dur-
ing bad weather. The
grooves will provide a
better grip for tires and
lessen the danger of hy-
droplaning.
v Also, the road is
equipped with New Jer-
isey-type parapets that
• teer out-of-control
cars along the edge of
the road instead of ric-
ocheting them into traf-
fic.
