WASHINGTON (AP) -
A bipartisan group of four

and Senate campaigns.
The four chief sponsors
are Republican Leader

nia and Sens. Edward M.
Kennedy, D-Mass.,

Rose said the scent will
last through at least 10 to
15 washings. A company
official said some scents
would last longer, but de-
clined to list them.
Marianne Golan, 26, a
Los Angeles-based manu-
facturer's representative,
who brought the shirts to
Chicago recently, said the
most unusual order the
company had received for
an odor was marijuana.
Dave Davorsky, vice
president and secretary of
We Make Scents, Los Ange-
les, confirmed, "That's
right — it was marijuana.
We would make the fra-
grance for a T-shirt if we
got enough requests, but
we're not selling to any
head shops yet. The people
that do the actual ordering
are buyers at big-name
stores."
them."
One of the more popular
scents is the pizza shirt. A
large, thin crusted pizza is
creatively drawn with a
provocative invitation
written underneath. When
the print is scratched, the
air suddenly smells as if
you'd walked into your fa-
vorite pizza parlor on a
Saturday night.
Another is a banana with
painted cheeks, eyes and
lips, lying in a hammock
turing Co. press agent and
he got wind of an Idea. He
suggested that 3M try put-
ting a scent on cloth in-
stead of paper. The com-
pany already was using
the smell concept on paper
as a teaching aid in child-
ren's books as well as in
the advertising of perfume
in magazines.
The shirts are white with
assorted colors around the
collars and cuffs. They're
nontoxic, nonallergenic,
saying "peel me."
On the whisky-scented
shirt, a bottle is drawn in
the center and above it are
the desperate words "hon-
est, officer, it’s my shirt."
"I'm guilty of the de-
signs, too," Rose con-
fessed, sounding rather
embarrassed. "But they
are so cutesy and the car-
toons make them more so.

Smelly T-shirts proving steady sellers
By Bob Rasmus ,[
Chicago Dally News
CHICAGO — Hank Rose
makes a living selling
smelly T-shirts.
Fortunately, they smell
like banana, cherry, grass,
licorice, peppermint, piz-
za, Ultra-Brite (tooth-
paste) and whisky.
Rose is pushing eight T-
shirts, each with a sprayed
scent over a brightly col-
ored cartoon. And they
smell just like the real
thing.
"That's because the
scents are not synthetic,"
Rose said. "They are ac-
tual oils, micro-encapsu-
lated and sprayed into the
shirt."
Mico-what?
"Micro-encapsulated. It
means the fragrance is en-
cased in little bubbles in-
visible to the naked eye.
When the little bubbles are
broken, the aroma is re-
leased. The only way to
activate these bubbles is
by scratching the front of
the T-shirt and breaking
