BRUSSELS - The com-
plaint heard increasingly
in European business cir-
cles these days has a fa-
miliar ring to American
ears: the Japanese are in-
vading local markets with
inexpensive exports, put-
ting lots of companies out
of business and people out
of work.
The tide of Japanese
products flowing into Eu-
rope has not reached near-
ly the level it has in the
United States. But govern-
ments and industries in
the European Economic
Community (EEC) are
afraid it could before long.
And the American experi-
ence, with many jobs and
even entire industries
being virtually eliminated
by Japanese exports, has
raised fear and apprehen-
sion on this side of the At-
lantic.
So as the United States
tightens up on Japanese
exports and Japan’s busi-
ness leaders divert more
of their products to Eu-
rope, the EEC is under-
mounting internal pres-
sure to stop the flood.
In recent weeks the EEC
Commission has been
forced by complaints from
Italy to slap on communi-
tywide controls against
ri
