amphetamines or supple-
mentary sugar are “fic-
tion, fads and fancies.’’ He
finds no evidence that they
enhance performance.
Despite the fact that
vitamin deficiencies are
rare in this country, some
athletes are given vitamin
B-12. It may have some
psychological benefit but it
is about as useful as hair
tonic, says Dr. Mercer.
Another fad — wheat germ
— also is without benefit.
The pediatrician con-
demns the current popular
magic potion, male hor-
mones. Not only is there
no improvement in muscu-
lar strength, there also is
a serious risk of interfer-
ing with normal growth,
he warns.
On Drugs
By Arthur J. Snider
CHICAGO (CDN) - The
only safe drug to give a
young athlete is coffee,
says Dr. Robert D. Mer-
cer, Cleveland clinic pe-
diatrician. Apart from caf-
feine and the administra-
tion of three deep breaths
of oxygen to swimmers
just before their events,
every drug or chemical
has a toxic effect, he says.
Trick diets, vitamins,
Six plastic tooth im-
plants have been in the
mouths of patients for up
to two years in a study
conducted by Dr. Arthur
Ashman of Columbia Uni-
versity, New York. The
implants are well-an-
chored in the tooth socket,
functional and producing
no discomfort.
One patient is a 40-year-
old woman whose natural
tooth was extracted after
it suddenly fractured. The
tooth was put together
with sticky wax while a
technician duplicated it in
plastic in 30 minutes. The
implant was sterilized and
placed in the socket left by
the natural tooth. It has
been in place for two
years.
Dr. Ashma believes the
acrylic resin is an ideal
plastic. It is inexpensive,
easy to handle and estheti-
cally acceptable. However,
he is reserving judgment
on whether plastic im-
plants should be adopted
clinically.
