Collected In English Cities
Famous British Artists Secured
To Design Placards For
Railroad Companies
Dr Ilomcr L Dodge dean of the
graduate school and director of the
school of engineering physics who
returned from a three and a half
months' stay in England late this
spring brought with him one of the
most attractive and unique exhibits
of the English poster that he coul 1
obtain jn England
England does not pertain to the
brusque untruthful and striking pos-
ter of the United States but instead
has principally the railway com-
panies developed the poster for its
artistic appeal to the people The
name of the advertising company is
the least part of the play of the pos-
ter Emphasis is placed upon the
subject
It was through the courtesy of the
railway companies in England that
Doctor Dodge was able to obtain
some of the most beautiful of the
posters that he possesses These
companies engage famous and capa-
ble artists to depict the attractive
points upon their route and the best
-work of the realm is therefore plac-
ed before the eyes of the public
Such companies as the London
Midland and Scotish Railway com-
pany Great Western Railway com-
pany the London and North East-
ern Railway company the Under-
ground and the London Tramway
company have done an extensive
work in the advertising field that
receives much attention in the col-
lection that Doctor Dodge has pro-
cured Many points of interest resorts
havens watering places and schools
of England such as Cambridge
Oxford Edinburgh Forth Bridge
Saltburn Whitby London War-
wick Castle Chester and Newquay
have been placed in advertising and
ithey may be seen in this collection
London “Punch" quotes Mark
fTwafin in advertising Bovril the beef
drink and eliminates forever the
statement that the English do not
ibave a bit of humor
Hampton Court New Garden
Tate Art gallery Camden town zoo
and many another attractive sights
for the seeing arc advertised togeth-
er wit the days they arc open and
the particular tram to take to reach
them
Famous British artists such as
Fred Taylor Healey Bishop H C
Lindscll Norman Wilhinson Adri-
an Stokes and Christopher Clark
have painted and sketched the most
of the posters that Doctor Dodge
has collected
Prof O B Jacobson Frof T H
Brewer Trot J O Moseley and
Prof W S Campbell have viewed
the collection and they have ac-
counted it one of the best
The collection is on exhibit to
everyone during the daytime Doc-
