DIKES ARE WEAKENING
ALONG ILLINOIS RIVER
BFARDSTOWX III Sept 17
(API — A thin line of sand bags stood
tonight between Beardstown's 7000
residences and the rising waters of the
Illinois river More than a hundred
men have labored without sleep since
Wednesday along the mile long levie
which protects the city from the river's
waters staunching the weaker spots ii:
the wall of sand bags
Women drove itrucku Jilted with
sand to the edges of the level and put
the sand in hags with which the dike is
being raised while other groups serv-
ed coffee to the workmen
Tonight the river stood at 22 feet I
inch less than four inches below the
top of the dike with the floods creep-
ing slowly upward

ccssors of the Romans'' Jarohson
stated because they have in every way
followed out the plans of the Romans
as to the development of the coun-
try "The Arabs hate the re-l'oresta
tion ot their lands very much"
Leaving Algiers the party drove to
the Grand Kahilla thru the Atlas
mountains and high plateaus into the
Sahara desert proper They went to
Biskra then on to Tuggurt an Arab
caravan trading center Here it wa
necessary to abandon their car be-
cause it is impnssiMe to go thru the
sands beyond Tuggurt
Mrs Jacobson and the children re
mained at this point whilr Professor
Jacobson proceeded inland by camel
caravan He skirted the edge of the
Sahara going inward five hundred
miles On this trip he visited the
Great Sand Desert called El-Souf
This deert is about the sic of Ok-
lahoma Jewelry Secured
After visiting the sand destert the
caravan proceeded to the town of

Spends Winter in Algiers
During the winter Prof Jacobson
settled in Algiers from which place
he visited Tunis and Morocco “A
point of interest is the noticeable lack
or racial intermarriage The Moham-
medans who are orthodox do not eat
or dppear in public and the women sre
always n’avily veiled A foreigner has
no opportunity to meet a Mohamme-
dan woman as she is betrothed at
twelve and placed in the harem until
she is of marriageable age The wo-
men of the Komads and Berbers do
not veil" Professor Jacobxon said
Threefold Rrason for Trip
Jacobson stated that the reason for
the intensive trip was that the crafts-
men of these tribes worked only fo
their prrsonal adornment and use and
thus it was impossible to buy samples
of their work from dealers He has
collected information and data that is
invaluable and of mst interesting na-
ture He plans to place hi collection
in a Museum and open it to the pub-
lic All the trips that were made had
three-fold purpose to paint to study
the Berbers and to asemble a reprg
sentative collection of their art and
craft
