IOME PEOPLE say that college students I cam nothing
That is a mistake No matter what kind of a student he
is the modern variety becomes proficient in providing alibis
The other day a professor started to give his class a quiz
which had bee assigned for several days A sort of moan
arose front the class The protests ran something like this:
"You didn’t say anything about this quiz yesterdav”
"1 haven’t got a pencil”
"I haven’t any paper”
“I havenT had time to study any" 4
“L forgot we were going to(have a quiz" ( T
“Let’s take he quiz next wck?' V ’ i U Vt'! H
The professor threw up his hands in disgust hut he took
enough time to point out the (inconsistence in the students’
philosophy ‘
Most college students pride themselves in their interest in
sports The like games They think baseball is almost an ideal
sport because of the spirit in which it is played - Yet the stu- F”
dents refuse to bring into the classroom the same standards
wheih they sincerely approve of and think necessary on thc-
basehall diamond
What if the player due to bat would say “I can’t bat this
time I forgot my bat and left it home”
“Sorry I’m late captain but I forgot there was a game
this afternoon”
r “I don’t want to play today Let’s put the game off until
£ tomorrow”
College students can’t very well claim to be reasonable
k beings when they will not take as serious attitude toward their
9 education as they do toward games Alibis are scorned in any
p athletic affair Yet they are regarded as clcvocness in a uni-
versity class

iQSION TO hold an extra session of sumcr school in
August which puts the university on an all-year schedule 1 '
is one of the most common sense advances made by the institu--"
tion for some time

As to the old inhibition to going to school in Auguest lie-
cause it is too hot most anyone will agree that August could
not be hotter than July in Norman Careful experiments have
' shown that there is no loss of health from school attendance
all year around some of the best school authorities in tire
country have pointed out v
And besides the economy of the plan there is the benefit
to the teachers ot the state who are compelled to work in the
regular summer sessions of their schools and have no chance
to take further work in their respective lines except during
August ’ jfi
It is a promising sign sfhen A state institution sltows a de- i-
fmite and common sense effort to get' on a business-like and
erviceable basis

TENNESSEE'S CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE’S ADVANCE
a o
The State of Tennessee is doing more to popularize evolution than
- Darwin ever could have thought of doing
When the legislative fathers of that state shifted their cud and
! hoisted their hip a little to ease tlieir flask to vote for a law against teach-
’ ing evolution in the public schools little did they think they were
advancing what they were easting their ballots against ’
v ’ - In 'the 'popular mind in the mind of the "matt of the street” as
' F ' philosophers love to say evolution means-little or nothing It’s an ab-
’ J street term - Somewhere they have heard it contradicted the Bible but
- £ ? in what respeet they are not sure If fltey do know anything f it they
jf believe evolution has something to do with ibonkeys ( 1
i ?: But the state of Tennessee has coupled Cydytion with Ireedom ot'
- 'j- speech and thought No matter how illy informed American citizens
know that freedom of thought and speech are things every American
j irrevocably is entitled to have It’s a part of the ‘mores’’ of the country
-1 ! If evolution means this freedom hurray for evolution they toy
'There must be something wrong with anything that restricts this free-
3 dom and anything that helps it out is all right '
V f : And then the wide publicity given the trial nav help some per-
jj sons to think originally abmit the matter ” '
But the pecuKar part of it u that the courts could not decide the case
' f ' on the bastsof freedom of speech and thought but on technicalities—

A total Wreck-alas she’d be
She knew without a doubt
At last the bitter hour arrived
Poor Mary grew quite pale
Suiipose her cramming was in vain?
' Suppose that she should fail?
i She wrote down all her knowledge
' And kept each studied rule
She made a “L"’ — got her degree —
Then started tcacliiiig school 111

THE CURB STONE
This little Imuk of cement plays a big part in the lives of all great
men' It in on this ilia I each one sits when he first comes to the liig
city
It is here that he looks at his last cent and valorotisly declares that
he will fight bravely on and will rise to distinction like Washington did
when he crossed to the higher side of the Rubicon
In many other wavs docs the lowly curb play a large part in our
lives If the curb were not there what would be? Perhaps the grass
would grow out in the street and surely the din would skid around with-
out the curh to hold it in place The very safety of our buildings de-
pends on the curb to hold the earth in place
Not only in our live docs the curb place prominently lmt also in
our deaths Many are tlie people who have died hapjiily with their
heads lying on the curb and the remains of a steering wheel where the
hly ought to be jr
