interetate commsrcs commission
Thursday rejected a proposal to end
government control over movements of
railroad refrigerator car*.
The office of defense transportation
which functions in the ICC. was given
authority to control the car* early in
the war. This supervision is still In
effect, under an extension of ODT’o
wartime powers.
The Idaho Potato and Onion Ship-
pers' association asked the commission
tn September to end the system. The
group said there i* no lon<w an emer-
gency to Justify the control* and a ro-
turn to distribution of the car* by the
railroads would promote efficiency.

government ia the real key to the
elimination of duplications by govern-
ment. In both the tax and expenditure
fields.”
Reed, high ranking Republican
member of the house ways and means
committee, said the cost of the na-
tional government has been increasing
steadily because it is "undertaking
more and more to carry on functions
whicS fundamentally and properly be-
long to the states and local govern-
ments.” „
"I tfflX great believer in leaving to
the states and local government* those
functions which essentially belong to
them.” he said. - "State officials should
use their influence through their rep-
resentative* in congress to see that
many activities now being carried on
by the federal government are cur-
tailed and returned to the states "
Reed urged that states not increase
their personal income taxes just be-
cause the federal Income tax was cut
by the present congress. A boost tn
the state levies, he said, would tend
to ’•interfere with business expansion,
production and employment."

“ beef receipts dropped
sharply as compared with earlier
rounds of the week, but buyer indif-

Cotton Irregular
i After Early Drop
NKW YORK. Dec. 2—-A3—Cotton
futures were irregular in moderate
dealings Thursday. Prices eased in
early trading on profit taking snd
hedging, but later recovered on mill
buying, commission house and New
Orleans,replacement demand.
New crop deliveries were strong,
with the distant December position at.
new season s high. Buying of the hew
crops was based on talks that this
farm bloc will attempt to write-in
tabor costs in. the parity formula
which would have the effect of sharp-
ly boosting the parity base.
