BAGHDAD. July 9—(4>)—The
American School for Boys here is be-
ing expanded into a college to prepare
Iraqi youth for the task of developing
barren but fertile lands along the
Tigris and Euphrates, which estimates
say can produce food for 70,000,000
people.
The area includes the traditional
site often selected as possibly that of
the Garden of Eden.
About two years ago. the Iraqi gov-
ernment asked the United States gov-
ernment to start a school on agricul-
ture and sciences.
School Founded
As a result the American School
for Boys, established in 1925. was ad-
mitted to the Near East College asso-
ciatfbn. which has colleges in Beirut,
Damascus, Istanbul. Athens and Sofia
The school now progressing toward
its new college status, was placed un-
der the direction of Dr. Ralph Laith-
aum. who succeeded veteran principal
Dr. Kalvin Staudt.
Sophomore laboratories ara to be
shipped from the American University
of Blerut and from the United States
Four-year agricultural study is plan-
ned at Baghdad.
