“The Retail View Point” Eat week we saw that the merchant who was a business man did hot need to depend on the “Buy at Home” slogan because he knew how to win customers without depending on it He knew that people buy where they can do the best regardless of location and he saw to it that his store was the place where thev could do the best Retailers have been so notoriously lax in their methods of going after business aggressively that this condition has given rise to what is known as “the retail view point” This is the policy so many retailers have of feeling that because their store is on the main street people will drift in to buy from them without waiting for a specific invitation They excuse themselves by saying “Here I am Everybody in town knows 1 am here and what 1 have to sell If they want some of my stilt! they will come and get it” This is the attitude that causes and we might say is a short cut to financial failure If you will but look about the town I care not where the man who is making money never gets into the habit of saying “buy at home” but instead says “for the best quality and service buy from us” It is not the fault of the people in the small town that they are driven to the larger cities and mail order houses to buy their needs hut it is the fault of the merchant himself If the merchant would wake up and realize what was going on and get a little busi- ness by giving the public what it wants and give it to it at a fair price nobody would ever have any kick That is the trouble however The average small town merchant will not stock his store so that it is possible to take care of the needs of his customers and yet lie cries if they go elsewhere to satisfy their wants
