‘America’s Too White,* King Says
ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) -
As he turns 70, the father
of slain civil rights leader
Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. says even the loss of
his son was not too great a
price to pay for helping
free his people.”
Interviewed Friday
shortly before a testimoni-
al dinner marking his 70th
birthday, the Rev. Martin
Luther King Sr. said great
progress has been made
by Negroes and still is
being made.
'It’s Ruining Us’
But he said he fears that
continued race prejudice
and hate could result in
mass killings by both
races.

"The church." he said,
"is still segregated and
wonders, ‘What's the mat-
ter with these people?’ It's
white and now the black is
trying to out-black the
white. This is sad."
Churches. King said, are
the chief offenders where
apathy toward problems is
sometimes talk violently,
he said: "Whites are re-
sponsible for this. It the
white American power
structure had listened to
these people at the time
they wanted to go to the, concerned,
bargaining table, you
wouldn’t have all these
‘isms’ and ungodly
theories. . . America is too
just guilty of apathy at ev-
ery point."
He pounded his fist on
the desk.
"Tell these folks,"z he
boomed, "that I am seri-
ous about this matter of
brotherhood. I have no bit-
terness. I do not hate the
man that took my son's
life."

At the dinner, in a tele-
gram read to the l.QOO
black and white persons
who attended. President
Nixon pledged his support
to the pursuit of "decency
and justice" for all Ameri-
cans.
Referring to the civil
rights work cf Dr. King
Jr., the President said:
"We shall not waiver in
our efforts to see it ful-
filled."
After the President s
message was read, there
was silence for about 30
seconds, and then brief,
polite applause.

"America’s too white,
man, and it's ruining us,"
he said "We can lose
America."
Gray-haired, thick of
torso and broad-faced,
King conveys a tough,
strong feeling. He stands 5
feet 8 and weights 228.
He has ministered for 38
years at Ebenezer Baptist
Church, site of the funeral
of both his sons — Martin,
shot to death in Memphis,
Tenn., April 4, 1968, and
the Rev. AD. King, who
drowned in a swimming
pool 15 months later. He
has one other child, a
daughter.
Preaching Is Somber
Sitting behind a wide
desk in the pastor’s study
at the church, he went
from quiet words of hope
to somber preaching
about racial problems.
Of the progress made,
he said: "It’s great. It’s
great. If I had to go back.
I'd go the same way. And I
have got a great deal of
strength even in the loss of
my sons. They're just not
dead. To me. they live, but
they’re just away."
King said he frequently
preaches in white church-
es in cities from New York
to Los Angeles on the sub-
ject "Disturbed About
America.”
‘America Still Hates’
"A m e r I c a's white,
man." he said. "And
America still hates. She
won't stop hating and they
hate Jews worse than Ne-
groes and the only reason
they accept them is the
money. . . If we can get
these folks to see, get hate
out of their heart. .. "
He was standing now,
out from behind the desk,
preaching.

In the past the message

Sunday with a visit to a

On Christmas Eve the

will visit one of Rome's
poorest suburbs. He will
say Mass at the Church of

where many workers live
in shantytown slums.
The Pope will return to
the Vatican to celebrate a
Mass of high pomp and

he will appear outside on
the balcony over the main
entrance to St. Peter’s, to
