HARLOW’S WEEKLY
QUANAH HEARS TWO CALLS
Daisy Lemon Coldiron
The winds that blow in the Southland,
They talk and they talk to me;
Always I hear them calling,
Calling eternally:
Come to your Mother s people,
Come to your blood, your own!
I came . . .
And the winds that blow in the Southland
Are blowing new worlds to me.
They are blowing me words that are precious
And the God of the White man Way;
But the wild, prairie winds are calling me, •
And oh, I cannot stay!
(Th e wild, graine winds are moaning,
"Quanah, Quanah, why do you roam?
The winds of my fathers are calling me,
crying, calling me home.)
The winds that blow in the Southland
.Are blowing my Mother to me,
They are blowing me understanding
Of h er that could never be free
They are blowing me love for her people,
I could follow the White-man Way
But the wild, prairie winds are calling me,
And oh, I cannot stay!
The winds of my fathers are calling me.
They moan, they are never still,
And I must go back to the prairies.
And the last Sun-dance on the hill.
(For the wild, free winds are moaning:
' Quanah, Quanah, why do you roam?'
The winds of my fathers are calling,
ever they call me home.
The winds that blow in the Southland
Are blowing me Cynthia s love,
They blow me the White-man religion
And the great white spirit above.
But always above their murmur
I hear the wild winds moan—
Nocona, my Father, I hear you,
I am coming back to my own!
I hear you, my Father, calling:
“Come back to your own tepee! ’
And I must go back to my people
Where they watch and wait for me.
(The long, strong winds are moaning:
"Quanah, Quanah, why do you roam?'
Oh the winds of my fathers are calling,
ever they call me home!)
