WHY HE BALKED
When Mr. W. 11. Dye was being
examined in an Oklahoma City court
Tuesday lo determine his qualifica-
tions as a Juror In a criminal case
he disiiialitled himself by asserting
that he did lie .iclleve In the im-
position of .ie (lenlh penalty.
It ho happens thai a great many
men agree willi Mr. live in Ibis atti-
tude and that a great many do not.
Hut there are few of those who
agree with lilni perhaps none who
have so good a reason as his; for
Mr. Dye once sat on a jury which
rendered a verdict sending a man to
death and after the man had died
it was discovered that he was Inno-
cent. Ugh!
Would you now if you were Mr.
Dye care to repeat the experiment of
tampering with human 'life?
If we read our Holy Hook correctly
the Lord lias an idea that His Is
the sole right to lake a man's life
and we are not at this lime pre-
pared to take issue with Him as to
what He believes to be best.
It Is bad enough we imagine to
take a stub pencil and write down on
a sheet of paper a few words which
usurp a divine prerogative even when
the law's victim Is guilty of a crime;
and when It is nfterwnrds discovered
that an innocent mart' has been made
to suffer the loss of his life we can
understand bow a member of the
Jury responsible should feel consid
erahle hesitancy in risking it the
second time. Oklahoma!!.
A LUXURY
Sumo people learn of the value of
the classified column in n newspaper
and some never do. One of the luxu-
ries of civilized living is a medium
of communication among the people
whereby one man can talk to every
citizen of his town and community
in one day. The classified ads are
full of human interest stories these
ads often tell one of what his friend:!
are doing there Is something of Inter-
est every day.

cost from $lo.0(i to $15.00 but the per-

THE WRONG PRINCIPLE
The attitude of Mr. llentley agri-
cultural agent for Oklahoma of insist
lag that the county demonstration
agent fur Carter County must come j
from another county is inexplicable
and to say the least of it ridiculous.
The county pays one-half of the bill
and should have some say us to who I
their agent shall be. In many in-
stances the amount paid by both coun
ty and state is supplemented by
communities In order to insure ef-
ficiency. If Carter county did not have a man
with brains enough and with execu-
tive ability enough to fill the ruiniire-
ments of the position it would be per-
fectly right and proper to go else-
where but everybody knows tiuit a
hu'.f dozen men are available who
know the county the reiiuiieiucnts of
the country and w ho have the cniifl- i
deuce of the farmers of the county I
and one of these should bo chosen. I
We might just as well have a con-1
gressiuan from some far off di
trict
elected to represent us or some sen-
ator from some far off state. The prin
ts the same.
There is not the slightest shadow of
'an excuse for such a policv to exist In
I ...... . - .. . . . I
this matter of county farm demon
strator and unless the policy is
! will not run any risk of incurring much
lispleasure if they refuse to make
'"' a Pproprlat ion for the job unless
I hey have
some say as to who shall
'fill it.

In a Scotch Heaven.
Early in the last century an old
Forfarshire aristocrat installed In tho
bedroom corridor of her castle an auto-
matic organ. It was hor delight of a
morning to wake her guests with its
strains. Cut it was not the delight
of one of them Miss Sophia John-
stone of Hilton to be so awnknned
and she said so. "Ye dinna like Uie
music? Ye shouldna say that Sophy"
said her hostess "Ye'U no' win to
heaven an ye dinna take pleasure In
music; it's to bo all music there ye
know." " 'Deed" said the incorrigible
one "an heaven's a place w' auld
wives playin' on hand organs at six
I o'clock in tho niornin" it's no' the
place I tak' it for; nor yet the place
I want to bo in."
Cleans Le.-.ther.
A reader of the Christian Science
Monitor writes: "I took my handbag
to a number of leather stores where
they all told mo it could not b
cleaned but I learned from a friend
that a tablespoonfui of oxalic acid dis
slved in a quart of cold water cleans
cowhide pigskin and sole leather verj
satisfactorily."
