Dr Michel came to Prince at the
beginning of the wrar and volunteered
In the Preach army. Owing to ihe
I crying need for surgeons, he was at
once commissioned as a second lleut
enant and assigned at a base ioiy>l-
I tal. Ills hard work and ability won
him promotion to a first lieutenancy
after the Verdun offer si ve In the
first half of 1916 when he was sta
tion renter for the French wounded.
Afterward iDr. Michel was trame
ferred to Lyons and was placed In
command of a milltay hospital '.here
and promoted to captain. The. For
i-ign I^eglon has Its base depot at
I von* and Dr Michel knew almost
all of the Americans enlisted In that
unit. He wag also a great frlnd of
United States Consul Jones at Lyons
A year ago Dr Michel offered his
service to the American forces and
was sent to American Red Cross hos-
pital No. 1 at Neullly, the former
American ambulance. He Is also
surgeon-in-chlef of the Ai ierb an hos
pital for civilians in Neullly.
Only a few other Ameileans have
ever received commissions In the
French army and they were all sec
ond lieutenants with the exception
of William Thaw, of the 1-afayette
Kscadrille. and Sweeny of the For
elgn Legion aw! later of the tauk
corps, who were first lleuti nants
The aviator pilots of th» Ijif.iyette
Kscadrille were only sergea’its. with
the exception of Dudley Hill, in ad
jutant Lufbery was only a second
lieutenant.
