Students at Freedom Elementary were recently received a lesson in respecting diversity
from Michael Korenblit. President of the Respect Diversity Foundation. Korenblit, the son of
Holocaust survivors, spoke to fifth graders about the importance of respecting people's dif-
ferences and standing up for one's friends and family if they are being treated unfairfy.
Students were allowed to ask questions they had about the holocaust and decided as a
group that everyone should do all they can to stop bullying. For more information of the
Respect Diversity Program, visit www.respectdiversity.org.
Principal’s suspension leads to protests
MUSKOGEE. Okla. (AP)
— The superintendent of
Hilldale Public Schools plans
to seek the dismissal of the
high school principal, a move
that has prompted protests
from students, parents and
teachers.
Principal Dewayne
Pemberton was handed his
termination papers Thursday.
Pemberton’s attorney said
Merrill sought the suspen-
sion and termination because
Pemberton wouldn’t require
his son's fiancee to drive a
school bus. The fiancee is a
teacher and basketball coach
for the district, O'Carroll
said, but doesn't have a
license to drive a bus.
Pemberton said he was
called to Merrill’s office Jan.
31 ui MtdWfO Harae for
two days to think about
whether the principal felt like
he did something wrong.
Pemberton returned two days
later saying he did nothing
wrong and then was suspend-
ed with pay.
Since then, students have
walked out of class, signed
petitions, picketed and held a
prayer vigil for Pemberton.
Teachers and parents wrote
the governor for help.
Some rallying on behalf of
Pemberton have called for
Merrill’s resignation,
O'Carroll said.
