Be happy
Someone mentioned last week
about having more "feel good
news to read. I'm not for sure if
the comment w as directed at us or
to the media industry as a w hole or
the fact that there is just so much
bad stuff out there. I didn't want to
ask.
Brenda Shance
Things That Matter
It s our nature to want to feel
good and live in a world where all
is well. We say we don't want to
hear bad news. but. ironically, bad
news sells.
So. today. I’m giving you good
news
No one is abusing anything. No
drugs, no domestic violence No
child abuse and no animal abuse.
There are no rapes, robbenes,
burglaries, murders, or shootings.
There are no floods, earthquakes,
tornadoes, hurricanes, or damag-
ing winds.
Weeds don’t grow, either.
Just sunshine, rain showers,
and flowers. And I like this one -
you can swim in Lake Keystone
without your clothes turning
brown.
Gas and grocery prices are low
and stocks are high.
Communist China has done so
well with the imbalance of trade
with the U S. they decided to for-
give us our national debts and
we're "home tree "
Our troops are all back on U.S
soil building levies and roads and
bridges.
Amnesty for all illegals has
been granted and we’re a larger
melting pot than ever before
Our road signs are in Spanish.
Arabic. Chinese. Cherokee.
Creek, and any other language
spoken in the area. That makes
many happy people because they
all know where they are going
now.
Everyone goes to the church of
their choice for the right reason
and no pastor is preaching hate
toward anyone or any thing.
Without a drug problem, fami-
lies are staying together and DHS
workers aren't removing kids
from dy sfunctional homes No one
is dysfunctional. No one is getting
drunk and no one is losing their
money, jewelry, house, vehicles,
or anything else to finance a gam
bling habit.
Oh. the casinos are still open
but they operate on free tokens.
You can truly pretend you'll win
the million dollar prize and not
even feel guilty as you pump more
free, happy face tokens into the
slot.
Workers are happy every where.
They can come and go when they
please. Job benefits are at the high
end with vacation, sick leave,
maternity leave, family sickness
leave, company car. and a shared
work load. If you show up some
day and just want to surf the
Internet, that’s ok. just be happy.
People will love to talk to
reporters because I) they have
nothing to hide and 2) they no
longer fear cultural shunning for
sharing their personal opinions or
the facts they know. When the
newsroom calls dispatch and asks
a simple question like. "Where s
the fire the trucks just went to?
they 'll tell us like it’s no big city
secret.
Newspapers all across the land
don't have a single typographical
error or corrections to deal with as
they are printing only the blessed
changes of our happy world.
In my happy world there are no
more anonymous, daily e-mails
criticizing typos and split infini-
tives and articles they don t like.
They like everything. All that time
once spent trying to obliterate my
potential for errors made as a
human being is now being direct-
ed towards doing gotnl for others.
In my happy world. I'm perfect
and so is everyone else because
only in an imperfect w orld do peo-
ple make mistakes, overlook
something, and forget things
And. there's no sickness,
there’s no disease. All is well
This isn't Kansas. Toto. this is
heaver..

She never had much of a child-
hood.
It's not that she was sad about it -
that's just the way it was
Actually her "mother" planned it
that way. Her mother wanted her to
make other children happy - and she
did. Her "daughter" just didn't have
much of a childhood of her own.
She did have lots of friends to play
with. They were always going on
adventures together - and they were
all fun.
She was cute and she seemed to
attract other girls from all over the
neighborhood. They d play tor hours
together. Often they d get into trouble
because they were supposed to clean
their room instead of cluttering it up
even more by playing with all her
things.
Another thing about her - for a girl
that cute, you'd think she'd have lots
of boyfriends. Only one boy ever
took an interest in her. though - but
with a guy that good looking, maybe
you'd never even want another one
Not only was she cute, but she
aged well. Most girls would give their
"eye teeth" to look that good - year
after year she never changed a bit.
Well, maybe her clothes changed -
she was really stylish and always had
the latest fashions - lots better than
most of her friends had. She changed
clothes a lot too - it was almost like
she went through her whole wardrobe
just to show off to her friends.
But they didn't mind - in fact that's
why her friends came to visit so
much. They wanted to see her model
her newest fashions. And. if she ever
John M Young
Some Things Never Change
put on that swimsuit of hers and went
to the beach - WOW!
This girl was really lucky - not
only did she have the "coolest"
clothes, but she had a flashy car too
And that one boyfriend was always
there to drive her around in it.
She had charm too - and she could
make money - even though she hard-
ly ever worked. She literally made
millions of dollars just on her charm,
good looks, cool clothes, flashy car,
and, of course, the "hunk" she usual-
ly had at her side.
She did have a dark side - if that's
what you want to call it. She had mul-
tiple marriages. Maybe you ought to
expect that out of the girl who "had
everything " There's one thing about
all those marriages, though, and
maybe that makes it easier - they
were all to that same "hunk" of a guy.
But - whatever - life goes on. The
girl who "has everything’ just turned
50 this week. Most of us at 50 are
sagging, wrinkling, limping, bulging.

and.. .just plain getting older. But not
the girl who has everything.
Happy birthday. Barbie!
Fifty years ago this week Barbie
made her debut at the American
International Toy Fair in New York
City on March 9.1959. Ruth Handler,
the wife of one of the founders of the
Mattel toy company noticed that her
daughter, who played with paper
dolls, always pretended they were
adults. So why not make a "grown
up" doll?
During a trip to Europe in 1956
Ruth noticed that German girls
played with a "grown-up" doll named
"Bild Lilli." Ruth bought three of
them and convinced her husband to
have Mattel start manufacturing
something similar. They named the
prototype "Barbie" after their daugh-
ter Barbara.
Since then over a billion Barbie
dolls have been sold worldwide in
over 150 countries, along with her
perennial boylriend "Ken (named
after their son) and their friends.
Hispanic Teresa. African American
Christie, and lots of others. They've
all got lots of clothes, cars, dream
houses, etc., etc. etc.
There probably isn't a woman or
girl in America 55 years of age or
younger who hasn t played w ith one'
All of us have watched our kids play,
and. from now on. you'll wonder
"Why didn't I think of that?" Ruth
Handler and her new idea for a doll is
the one we ought to envy!
Oh well...Barbie, thanks for the
memories!

Thanks for supporting 4-H and FFA
Editor: . . „ ,
In these critical and changing times, especially lor
youth today, public criticism, financial uncertainties, neg-
ative influences, etc., it is especially comforting and satis-
fying to see some things have not changed, and we are
thankful for it.
We would like to recognize and "thank" local and
county businesses, banks, elected officials, area chambet.v,
Ag teachers and their families, parents, grandparents,
aunts, uncles and so on. If it was not for your continued
financial, moral, and emotional support and dedication
toward 4-H and FFA students in Creek County, this Ag
lifestyle and strong positive influence could become a
thing of the past.
Also a special “thank you” to Robert Yochum, the
Johnson family, the Varner family, and the Enlow family
for all the years, and we do mean YEARS, of countless
hours that have not changed. Without your personal sup-
port. "the Creek County Spring Livestock Show and
Premium Sale" could not and would not be the success
that it continues to be.
All of you contribute toward smiles on kids’ faces,
sparkles in their eyes, and wonderful memories that will
last a lifetime. What more positive influence could one
have? That makes it all so worth it for our youth today.
Thank you all, again, for your kindness and generosity.

Thanks to workers at Ranch Terrace
Editor:
We are all too quick to criticize folks when they do
wrong (myself included), so it is time to compliment the
staff and workers at Ranch Terrace Nursing Home.
Recently, there have been several residents pass away.
Everyone at Ranch Terrace is so kind and caring to the
friends and family members during these times. Also, as a
memorial to a former Med Nurse that passed away, the
Ranch Terrace folks made flower arrangements for some
of the residents whom had known her. to enjoy in their
rooms. From the remaining flowers, they made arrange-
ments and placed them near the front entrance for people
to enjoy as they came into Ranch Terrace.
Also, the staff needs to be commended for the many
well-done jobs they do from assisting residents moving in
and out. changing rooms, helping bathe or whatever the
needs are, to helping remove keys from a locked car.
These are just a few things that 1 have witnessed them
doing. I would like to mention names, but do not want to
slight any one, so 1 will not.
Ranch Terrace, just keep up the good, kind and caring
jobs you do to make your residents feel that they are
loved.

Thanks for the information
Editor:
In regards to M.L. Asher’s letter to the editor about
keeping your opinions on the opinion page (“Businesses
warned about union activity”), there is an effort to hide the
facts about the push of socialism in this country.
They would like for you to hide everything in the opin-
ion columns. Card check is a very real (and dangerous)
issue that people need to know about. I applaud the Herald
for seeing the danger wc are in by not having the facts
about this assault on our country.
Sadly, some Americans don’t understand that the peo-
ple in Washington are making decisions daily that affect
them personally, and probably won't until it is too late.
