Oklahoma CB Sanchez
keeps making big plays
CLIFF BRl NT. AP Sports Writer
NORMAN. Okla. (AP) — Teams keep testing Oklahoma
cornet hack Zack Sanchez He keeps making them pay.
The sophomore has a pick in each of his three games this
season, tying for the national lead. His interception of
Tennessee quarterback Justin Worley in the end /one was a
key play in the fourth ranked Sooners' 34-10 win over the
Volunteers on Saturday night
Sanchez left Oklahoma's prev ious game against Tulsa after
taking a helmet to the shoulder, limiting his ability to handle
contact against Tennessee. The interception was especially
important to him because he felt he missed tackles w hile deal-
ing with pain.
"I had to make up for not being able to tackle tonight." he
said "For me to make a play like that was huge for the
momentum of the defense and making up for trying to tackle
with one arm. Regardless. I should have made those tackles,
so I had to do something to redeem myself."
Sanchez has intercepted live passes in his past six games,
and he blocked a field goal in the opener against Louisiana
Tech.
His run of interceptions started late last season, when he
took his first career pick back 74 yards for a touchdown
against Kansas State. Two games later, he intercepted
Alabama's A I. McCarron in the Sugar Bowl and returned it
43 yards He has picks this season against Louisiana Tech.
Tulsa and Tennessee.
"Maturing in the defense, maturing as a player on the field.”
Sanchez said. "Kind of diving into film more than I did last
year and understanding route concepts and offenses a little
more and how they'll attack me this year. That’s the biggest
thing. |tist growing and getting older with experience."
Sanchez had two tackles against Tennessee. He got up slow-
ly a few times after contact but lought through it.
"lie practiced all week, we just didn't do any tackling drills
with him." Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "He's done
those so much through the years that he isn't going to forget
in a week. He practiced, so he was prepared to play. He will
be prepared next week."
Sanchez should get plenty of action Saturday when the
Sooneis play at West Virginia. Mountaineers quarterback
Clint Trickett passed for 511 yards in a win over Maryland on
Saturday, and his team ranks fourth nationally in yards pass-
ing.
Sanchez, doesn’t mind getting a lot of action.
"Last year I didn’t want to get beat deep for big plays," he
.aid. Now. they're kind of trying me a little more. I'm mak-
ing sure I'm more technically sound against the things they do
when they come at me. I feel like I’ve handled it pretty well.
I ve just got to continue to get better each week. It's always a
growing thing when you’re a DB.”

NFL News
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The face of the franchise was
nowhere to be found as the Minnesota Vikings flailed away
against the New England Patriots on Sunday, and it’s not clear
when, if ever, Adrian Peterson will rejoin them.
The star running back was inactive for the team's home
opener after being charged with child abuse for striking his 4-
vear old son with a tree branch, a stunning development for
one of the league's most popular and well-respected players.
For eight years Peterson has been the focal point of the
Vikings offense, but on Sunday he stayed away from the sta-
dium to avoid becoming more of a distraction.
Coach Mike Zimmer repeatedly declined to talk about
Peterson after a mistake-filled 30-7 loss only to later describe
an offensive malaise that he had previously not seen from his
icam.
NEW YORK (AP) - After a tough week off the field, the
NFL got back to playing — and the focus turned to big-name
players who were injured all over the league.
Robert Griffin III, Jamaal Charles, DeSean Jackson, AJ.
Green and Knowshon Moreno all left their games on a busy
Sunday for team trainers and medical staffs.
Griffin dislocated his left ankle in the first quarter of
Washington's 41-10 victory over Jacksonville, putting his sea-
son in jeopardy. The Redskins quarterback was scheduled for
X-rays and an MRI to determine more about the injury. He
and coach Jay Grudcn did not offer a timetable for a return,
but the injury typically sidelines NFL players for at least two
months.
Jackson also left the game shortly after he sprained the AC
joint in his left shoulder in the first quarter. He hoped to be
able to play next week against Philadelphia, his former club.
In Denver, Charles left with a left ankle injury alter being
brought down in the first quarter against the Broncos, and did
not return. Green aggravated an injured toe during the
Cincinnati Bengals' opening series and sat out the rest of the
game, a 24-10 win over Atlanta.
