Devotional author Oswald

Gtxl spoke this powerful
message to me when I mis-
takenly turned to the June 26
devotional, thinking it was
the devotional for July 26th.

one that began years ago.
Chuck and I were disci-

it up. wear it out; make it do.
or do without."
Gene especially empha-
sized the saying about cars,
since they cost so much and
retain so little of their original
value He cautioned people to
drive the miles out of a ear
before buying another.
“Drive that ear until you are
just walking down the road
with the steering wheel in
your hands.” We took his
advice seriously, it still
affects us today.
The people we serve.
Internationals and the
Burmese refugees, watch our
lives as we try to follow
God's guidance. They com-
pare our lives with theirs -
comparing our choices, our
status, education level, and
finances to theirs. This which
leads them to ask from their
culture, "Why would they
serve us when they are not
our family, or our tribe?" Our
pastors and friends. Sei and
Ching. try to explain that we
are passing onto them the
love and comfort Gtxl and
others have given to us.
They are also confused by
the cars we drive. The
Burmese have never been
able to buy anything substan-
tial until coming to the USA.
Most buv new cars here
because they can. and to feel
safe driv ing.
We on the other hand drive
very old cars - mine a
300,000 mile 1997 Nissan
with a dent. Chucks drives a
I WO Mazda with a huge gash
and chipping paint, like peel
mg bark on a tree. They are
quite confused because our
car looks like a poverty
stricken, poor person's car.
"How can they then help us.
our ears are better?"
Life in the kingdom is
upside down and may seem
confusing. The last will be
first/ the first last
(Matt.19:30); the strong
weak/ the weak strong: the
poor/ rich; the rich /pern
(Luke 1:46). God calls us to
be like His Son now and later
(Phil .3:21). who didn’t have a
place to lay his head (much
less a g«xxl car) (Matt.8:20).
We must remember wealth
can be a gilt from God
(Lee.5:11/), a false idol tl
Titus 6:10. Matt. 6:24). may
lead to covetousness (Col.
3:5), has spiritual power for
gixxl or evil (Luke 16:13). or
in the hand of a disciple may
be used to care lor the poor
and needy (2 Cor. 8:1-5)
(christcovenant.org). Wealth
and life are most fulfilling as
we eive - "The Best We Have
for Gtxl."

You. Lord, for supplying all

Thank You. Lord, for being

Finally, thank You. Lord,
for loving me when 1 was
unlovable; when 1 was living
and walking in the ways of sin
and ungodliness. I was dead in
trespasses and sin, earing only
for myself. But You, in your
great mercy and grace, came
to me. raised me up out of the
deep miry clay, made me alive
in Christ and planted my feet
on the King's highway.
Thank You. Lord, for being
my Shepherd: I shall not want;
after passing through this val-
ley of the shadow of death. I
shall dwell in your house for-
