cessful joint endeavor is

W.C. Fields said, “After two
days in the hospital. 1 took a turn
for the nurse .”
On some deals, you have one
chance to make your contract.
At other times, though, you '.vill
have more than one. If you must
choose between the two, you
would usually go with the math-
ematically more likely.
However, if you can try both
lines, winning when either
works, then you have the best of
both worlds.
You are in three no-tnimp.
West inconsiderately leads the
heart king to dummy’s bare ace.
How would you continue?
You were right to open two
no-trump. That was the only
way to show a balanced hand
with your point-count. North
made a reasonable decision to
raise to three no-trump. His
hand was weak to risk ending in
four no-trump if you did not
have club support. Yes, on this
deal, six clubs is a great con-
tract. But without using mirrors,
it is impossible to bid all deals
perfectly.
You have eight top tricks:
three spades, one heart, three
diamonds and one club. There
are two chances for a ninth win-
ner diamonds 3-3 or the club
finesse working. Which is better
mathematically?
A 3-3 break is 3533 percent
and a finesse is 50 percent. So
should you take the club
finesse?
No — at least, not yet. If it
loses, you will surely go down
Instead, check the diamond suit
first. Play a diamond to your
ace, cash the diamond queen,
and lead a diamond to dummy's
king When they break 3-3,
cross to your hand and cash the
13th diamond. If. though, dia-
monds are 4-2, take the club
finesse. Your chances have gone
up to 67.77 percent.
