College football
Jones expects close TU-OSU battle
Royals sitting
in good shape
TULSA (AP) — Oklahoma State football coach
Pat Jones is predicting a tough, defensive game
between his Cowboys and the University of Tulsa
Golden Hurricane.
The two teams square off at 7:30 p.m Saturday
before a homecoming crowd in Tulsa's 40,000-seat
Skelly Stadium.
“The game will probably be hard fought and low
scoring, and may be decided in the final quarter."
Jones said.
He based his prediction on the teams' two most
recent meetings, which saw Oklahoma State come
away with a 9-0 victory last year, and Tulsa winn-
ing 25-15 in 1982
Tulsa head coach John Cooper is counting on his
team to play with inspiration when it faces 10th-
ranked Oklahoma State
Cooper believes Tulsa's failure to play inspired
ball was behind its lasses to eighth-ranked
Brigham Young two weeks ago and Arkansas last
week.
"We played excellent football teams However,
we moved the ball well against both, but were
unable to score," said Cooper
Cooper is looking for inspiration from the
players who lead his rushing attack, junior runn-
ing back Gordon Brown, and senior fullback
Johnny Horton
Brown has rushed for a total of 268 yards on 39
carries Horton has a total of 119 yards on 24 car-
ries.
Tulsa. 1-2, is off to its worst start since being 0-4
in 1981. and Cooper is concerned about Saturday's
opposition.
"This will probably be the best Oklahoma State
team we have faced since 1 became head coach
here,” said Cooper. "Their defense is extremely
active. I’m not sure we can throw at all against
those guys. Leslie O'Neal (defensive tackle) is as
good as any defensive lineman we will play
against."
Oklahoma State is going into Saturday's game
with its best start in years For the first time since
1945 the Oklahoma State Cowboys are ranked
among the Top 10 of college football
Last week, the Cowboys, who were unranked at
the start of the season, boosted their record to 3-0
by defeating San Diego State, and moved up from
12th to 10th
“Well, the ranking is nice and what-not. but they
really don't mean all that much." said Jones.
Sooners reduced to ‘basic and simple ’
NOKMAN (AP) — With injuries in the backfield
reducing its option offense to a "basic and simple
level, seventh-ranked Oklahoma opens its Big
Eight Conference schedule Saturday against Kan-
sas State
Sophomore running backs Spencer Tillman and
Earl Johnson — who accounted for almost 2.000
yards rushing last year for the Sooners — will not
play against the Wildcats, nor will defensive end
Kevin Murphy
Tillman hasn't played this year because of a
hamstring muscle pull Johnson is out after ag
gravating a knee injury he suffered last year
Murphy is hobbled by a knee sprain
The Sooners. 3-0. are averaging 130 yards pass-
ing per game, the highest figure in more than a
decade
But that figure is deceiving, warns offensive
coordinator Mack Brown
Quarterback Danny Bradley has been throwing.
Brown said, "because we just don't have the
backs The longest run we've had this year has
been 33 yards, which is bad (compared with'
the history of Oklahoma football "
Last week, in a 34-15 win over Baylor, Steve
Sewell was the only player in the Sooner backfield
playing in the same position as he was listed on the
Oklahoma pre-season depth chart Sewell was the
leading rusher for the Sooners. gaining 80 yards
Freshman halfback Patrick Collins suffered a
hip-pointer against Baylor, and another freshman.
LvdellCarr. played only m the first half
Others seeing action were seldom-used seniors
Jerome Ledbetter and Darrell Weddingtnn and
freshmen Don Maloney, Chris Richards and
Richard Dillon Because of lack of depth, the
Sooners have also moved freshman defensive
back Damon Stell over to the offensive backfield
Bradley finished eight of 15 in passing for 107
yards and two touchdowns against Baylor Both
scoring tosses came on audibles by Bradley
Brown said that with the combination of a new
offense and not knowing what players will be in
the backfield. "we've had to stay very, very sim-
ple and basic "
The Wildcats' last win against the Sooners was
in 1970. and Oklahoma has a huge edge in the 69
year series

The California Angels have fallen
from the chase, and the Minnesota
Twins are left with only a slim hope
of capturing the American League
West — all without the division-
leading Kansas Royals lifting a bat.
Both the Angels and Twins lost
Thursday night while the Royals
were idle, and now the picture in the
AL West looks like this:
The Royals lead the Twins by two
games and the Angels by four, with
three games left for each team That
eliminates the Angels, and either a
Kansas City victory or another Min
nesota loss would clinch at least a tie
for the Royals
The Twins lost their third in a row.
4-3 to the sixth-place Cleveland In-
dians. on a home run by Jamie Quirk
with two out in the ninth inning
Quirk had not been to bat for the In
dians since being recalled from the
minors on Monday
“How did he get here’’” Twins cat
cher Tim Laudner asked "1 don t
know if he just showed up and they
gave him a uniform, or what."
The Angels lost 2-1 to Texas on a
sixth inning homer by Ned Yost

Manger John McNamara said "It's

Longhorns to find out how tough they are
By The Associated Press
After just one game. Texas Coach Fred Akers
isn't sure what kind of a team he has. even though
it's ranked No. 2 in the country
He'll find out Saturday when his longhorns
meet fourth-ranked Penn State in one of the key
college football games
"We were fortunate in beating Auburn," says
Akers, whose defense surrendered 436 yards in the
season-opening victory, the most given up by an
Akers' team in a regular-season contest in the
eight years he has been at Texas.
"I don’t think they (Auburn) knew exactly what
to expect from us with so many of our seniors
gone." Akers said.
In other games involving the nation's ranked
teams, it's No. I Nebraska at Syracuse; No 3 Ohio
State at Minnesota; Miami of Ohio at No. 6
Washington; Kansas State at No. 7 Oklahoma;
Temple at No 9 Florida State; No. 10 Oklahoma
State at Tulsa; Texas Christian at No. 11 Southern
Methodist; No. 12 Georgia at South Carolina; No.
13 Clemson at No. 18 Georgia Tech; No. 14
Michigan at Indiana; LSU at No. 15 Southern Cal;
Rice at No. 16 Miami. Fla ; No 17 UCLA at Col-
orado; No. 19 Notre Dame at Missouri, and Ten-
nessee at No. 20 Auburn.
Nebraska, which embarrassed Syracuse 63-7
last season, will be heavy favorites again, even
though running back Jeff Smith is hurt.
Smith, leading the nation in all-pupose running
and punt returns, sprained his left ankle in last
week's victory over UCLA and didn't play the se-
cond half
Clemson's surprising 28-23 loss to Georgia last
Saturday dropped the Tigers from second to 13th
and left Coach Danny Ford concerned about his
team's turnover problems The Tigers made
seven turnovers against the Bulldogs. Ford said
his club can't afford to do the same thing against a
surprising Georgia Tech team this weekend.
"Their offensive team is basically the one that
was with them last year." said Ford of Georgia
Tech, which climbed into the 18th spot in The
Associated Press Top 20 poll

Allen quit*
PHOENIX, Aril. (AP) - George
Allen, saying it was "a day of
sadness and a day of pride,
resigned as head coach of the
United States Football League's
Arizona Wranglers - apparently
ending his 14-year pro coaching
career.
Allen, 66, said he would remain
with the organization as chairman
of the board and part owner, and
named assistant coach and offen-
sive coordinator Paul Lanham as
his successor.
Bamberger again
MILWAUKEE (AP) - George
Bamberger is coming into a
familiar situation as the new
manager of the Milwaukee
Brewers.
Six seasons ago, Bamberger was
hired by Brewers General
Manager Harry Dalton to make
the American League club respec-
table after a disastrous 67-95
record in 1977. He responded with a
93-69 mark in 1978 and a franchise-
record 95-66 in 1979.
This week, Bamberger accepted
the call again from Dalton. This
time he inherits a team which has
posted the worst record in the ma-
jor leagues this season.
"I think anyone who follows
Milwaukee Brewers' baseball
knows that he is one of the most
popular managers we've had,"
Dalton said of Bamberger, who
was named Thursday to succeed
Rene Lachemann as manager
"He’s a positive, aggressive, en-
thusiastic manager."
Bamberger. 59. managed only 92
games in 1980 before undergoing
heart bypass surgery. He resigned
the managerial job Sept. 8 and took
a front-office position.
"If it wasn't Milwaukee, I
wouldn't be back," said
Bamberger. "I have a lot of fond
memories from here.”
(rood fight
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -
"What better fight than this." says
Phillip Brown.
"I knew it would come."
Well, it hasn't happened yet, but
Brown is scheduled to meet Gerry
Cooney Saturday in what will be
Cooney's first fight since he was
stopped by Larry Holmes in the
13th round in a bid for the World
Boxing Council heavyweight title
June 11.1982. at Las Vegas. Nev.
The fight has been postponed
three times, and more than a few
boxing people wondered if Cooney
would fight anybody, let alone
Brown.
Cooney had his doubts, too.
"It got to the point where 1 said.
‘Hey, maybe God don't want you to
fight anymore," Cooney said
Thursday. "But I had to keep try-
ing because that's what's in my
heart to do."
It has been an agonizing trip for
Cooney from defeat amid the heat
and hulabaloo of Las Vegas to what
he hopes signals a new beginning
in this raw, growing city of 270,000
people, which is about half the
state's population.
Cooney, who admits he had trou-
ble accepting the loss to Holmes,
turned his back on boxing for
several months.
Then Brown, a former Cooney
sparring partner, was selected as
his comeback opponent and a fight
was scheduled for June 18, 1983.
But Cooney suffered an injury to
his left hand and the fight was
pushed back to Sept. 9 of that year,
only to be called off when Cooney
underwent surgery on a knuckle.
The fight was scheduled again
for last July 20 at Dallas, only to be
postponed once again when Cooney
pulled a muscle in his left shoulder.

Kuhn moves out
NEW YORK (AP) - Bowie Kuhn
has moved out.
"You know this day is coming, but
it’s still sort of a shock when it ar
rives." Kuhn said, standing among
the boxes of papers and books that
were the accumulation of 154 years
as commissioner of baseball
Although he officially rules the
game until Monday, he moved out of
his office Thursday night to make
room for the new man, Peter Ueber-
roth.
"I had a few years to think about
it, so, presumably, it should not
come as a monumental thing.” he
said "But it still is."
