Sapulpa (Okla.) Herald. Friday. June H. 1«*4—PAGE FIVE
Hucksters get rich promising riches
When we were kids growing up
during the Depression, we saved
matchbook covers The story was
that if you collected 1,000 of them -
all different — you would get a free
bicycle.
None of us had any idea where we
would send the 1,000 matchbook
covers once we had them or who
would exchange them for the bike
The answer, I'm sure, was nobody
At least no kid of my acquaintance
ever won a new bike with the mat-
chbook covers. Of course, we all
stopped before we got anywhere
near 1,000 Billy Tomsick came
closest and he had, I think. 238
But such is the power of the idea
that we can get something for
nothing — or practically nothing —
that we will go for it, no questions
asked.
Now that we have grown up, we
still are taken in by the lure of in-
stant riches. We line up to buy lot-
tery tickets that hold out the promise
of making us millionaires overnight
We line up at the gaming tables at '
Las Vegas or in Atlantic City where
still another new casino opened
recently to take care of the eager
overflow on the boardwalk
You don't even have to line up to
collect your good fortune By mail-
ing $9 95 to Donald Goodgame (can
you believe the name?) you can
receive a Spark of Life pendant
which reproduces on one side a
small section of one of
Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceil-
ing of the Sistine Chapel at the
Vatican It shows God touching the
tip of his finger to the tip of Adams
finger and creating the "spark of
life"
According to Mr. Goodgame.
when you get your pendant, “all you
have to do is press it tightly to your
body and concentrate on the very
thing you need most and repeat
Evangelists
in England
The two big-time American
evangelists are both tilling the
spiritual fields of England, and it
might look like competition, but ac-
tually the two men are long-time
pals.
One of them, Billy Graham. 65, is
the old master, while the other, Lui
Palau, 49, is the up-and-coming pro-
tege
"I've copied everything I know
from him," Palau says. "He has
counseled me many times, asked
prayers for me. spoken well of me.
He’s done more for me than you can
imagine. He’s our pope' — the
'pope'of evangelism.”
By coincidence, but with
geographical coordination, the two
now are embarked on separate,
three-month preaching missions in
England, trying to quicken the
religious pulse there

silently the biblical phrase, "Ask
and ye shall receive."
At the end of 30 days, he says,
"you will see the results which may
come in the form of a better-paying
job, a new-found relationship with
someone you love or a winning
sweepstakes entry."
Whether or not religion can bring
us wealth and good fortune, there
are some clergymen who are enjoy-
ing wealth and good fortune
themselves by convincing us it can.
Reverent Ike, the flamboyant, 48-
year-old black preacher in New
York, exhorts his ecstatic

parishioners to "use your mind
power to get you money, Cadillacs
(plural) and a good house.'
Reverend Ike himself has a powder
blue Mercedes (chauffeur-driven)
and palatial homes in New York and
Hollywood
"This lack of money is the root of
all evil" is his text. That isn’t exact-
ly how the Bible puts it. but it has a
nicer ring to it than what that old
kill joy St. Paul, said: “The love of
money is the root of all evil.”
Reverend Ike cites Jesus as his
authority when he promises his con
gregation material riches This to
him is what Jesus meant when he
said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of
God and all these things shall la-
added unto you "
"I want 'all these things' cars,
money and a good house - and you
are a hypocrite if you don't admit
you want them too," he tells his rapt
hearers
You put your mind power to get
"all these things" by writing to
Reverend Ike and telling him what
you want.
"When you send me a letter, he
says, "this makes dear in your own
mind the idea of the good you desire
Whatever idea you make dear in
your own mind, you will make hap-
pen in your own experience Where
the attention goes, the power flows
You can't lose with the stuff I use ”
Those who strike it rich by using
.he techniques of Reverend Ike are
probably as rare as those who strike
it rich by any other system But, like
your lottery turning out to be a win-
ner. it CAN happen If it doesn't —
w ell, we can go on hoping
As one of Reverend Ike's followers
says, "He's the only hope I have left
Just being able to hope is
something "
Sure That’s what kept us kids go-
ing. collecting matchbook covers
during the Depression

The signal light is man’s guide to safer travel. How-
ever, they protect only as they are obeyed.
The Bible is God’s Signal Light and guide for man’s
path through life.
“Thy teord is a lamp unto mu feet, and a lip lit unto
mu path"
Through study of God’s word, we learn His will for
our life, and He will lead in paths of righteousness.
ATTEND CHURCH
The Church is God's oppointed agency in this world
for spreading the knowledge of His love for man and
of His demand for man to respond to that love by
loving his noighbor. Without this grounding in the
love of God, no government or society or way of life
will long persevere and the freedoms which we hold
so dear will inevitably perish. Therefore, even from
o selfish point of view, one should support the Church
for the soke of the welfare of himself and his family.
Bayond that, however, every person should uphold
and participate in the Church because it tells the truth
obout man's life, death and destiny; the truth which
alone will set him free to livo as a child of God.
