Sapulpa High School is one of the smallest
schools in <) \ and has trouble competing with the
larger schools that seem to have unlimited budget-
jumbo Irons and synthetic turf on every plavirie
field.
So the money Sapulpa makes for \anous athlet-
ic programs is crucial and every penny counts
(Tver the past several years, out of state comp,;
mes not affiliated with the school have been sellinc
calendars under the pretense that proceeds go hack
to the school district, but that isn't the case.
Sapulpa Booster Club Secretary Debra Henley
said the company sends representatives to local
businesses claiming to be from Sapulpa schools and
selling advertisements for a calendar.
I hey claim the money made will go hack to the
school's athletic department, hut Sapulpa has never
received a cent.
We do not sell a sports calendar," Henley said.
We want to get the word out to local businesses
that none of the money goes back to the school. We
contacted Hetty ( alley at the Chamber to let her
know to be on the look out for these people and to
alen businesses "

State still fights for execution
By BOB SHERRILL
Herald Stall VV riter
In the early hours of Oct. 6. 1987.
Sapulpa lire lighters were hot titled
when they pried open the trunk ol a
burned vehicle and found the charred
remains of Laura I Sanders. 22, and
Michael Houghton. 27
Six days later, Robert \V. Lambert.
21, and Scott A. Haiti, 17. were arrest-
ed and confessed to those murders, be-
lieved by many law officers to be the
most brutal in ■ eek County history.
In March I9N I amber! was con
victed and handed a verdict ot execu
tion by lethal injection
Sixteen years later, alter two jun
trial, uid live mental compeloncv
hearings, the state is still fighting to
see that Lambert is executed for his
role in that crime.
Lambert is expected to return to
Creek County on May 3 for another
hearing that could exempt him from
the death penalty
( reek County Assistant District
Vttorney Carol Iski now leads the
team that will take on the job of con-
vincing a jury that Lambert is not
menially retarded.
This hearing is the result of a L.S.
Supreme Court decision that the eve
cution of mentally retarded people was
cruel and unusual punishment.

Henley also said the calendar doesn't have a
company name, phone number or contact person
listed any w here on the calendar.
Henley said if anyone comes into a place ot
business and tries to sell a calendar, the store owner
should hold oil and check with Sapulpa Athletic
Director Tom Ballenger or Sapulpa Booster Club
President Kevin Lawson to verity the project
"Several years ago we supported a calendar with
the basketball and wrestling teams, hut we received
some of the money and dealt w ith a specific com-
pany. said Assistant Athletic Director Dins Panky
Tor the past couple of years, there have been
people soliciting the local businesses and getting
them to advertise on the calendars, misleading the
store owner into thinking the money goes back to
the programs, but we haven’t ever seen any of the
money." Panky said.
" There have been times w hen the sports sched-
ules change and we can’t contact anyone to correct
it."
The Sapulpa Boostei Club raises money lot all
Sapulpa athletic programs and distributes the funds
equally among the sports The ciub operates the
concession stand at the Chieftain Center during
•porting events.
They also sell Sapulpa merchandise out ol a
trailer at fixilball games and sell ads for the football
program. The program is one of the club's main
fund-raisers and the money goes back to the athlet-
ic department.
"Businesses and family members of seniors pur-
chase the ads and the money goes back to the ath-
letic department to help the different sports at
Sapulpa." Henley .aid.
