dle mix, was brought to the Sapulpa Municipal Animal Shelter
with his siblings a couple of weeks ago. He’s good natured and
loves to be petted. Like other dogs at the shelter, Pele and his
siblings need a fenced yard. They are awaiting adoption from the
shelter, located at 515 E. Fife St. For an adoption application,
drop by the shelter or the Spay, Inc. Thrift Store on Brown Street,
or call 227-2722. In addition, Spay, Inc. will underwrite the cost of
neutering Pel6 or any other animal adopted from the shelter dur-
ing August for adoptive families.
CHEROKEE
Continued from Page 1
lnhofc, a member of the Senate
Indian Affairs Committee, told the
Tulsa World he would be "very reluc-
tant" about sponsoring legislation to
address the constitutional crisis of the
nation’s second-largest American
Indian tribe
lnhofc wants Clinton to use his
executive authority to oust Byrd, but
he and others doubt if the President
would take such action.
Philip H Vilcs Jr of Tulsa, one of
the tribe’s ousted justices, said the
Cherokee constitution and a 1906 fed-
eral law give the president the power
to remove Byrd.
"We could have a new chief this
afternoon," he said.
Intervention by Congress would
take too long and be subject to a court
challenge, Viles said.
The judges in February agreed to a
raid by the Cherokee Nation Marshal
Service of Byrd's office. The lawmen
were looking for evidence in a probe
of alleged misuse of funds.
Byrd fired the marshals, but the
judges reinstated them. The lribal
Council then impeached the judges.
Ms. Finley said Byrd had not flatly
rejected the terms of the proposal
worked out in Washington and was
still thinking about agreeing to it
He walked away from the negotia-
tions in part because the plan would
require him to overstep his powers
under the Cherokee constitution, Ms.
Finley said.
The chief does not have the author-
ity to reinstate the tribal justices,
which he might have been forced to
do last week if he had signed the
agreement, she said.
“The Tribal Council voted to
impeach the justices, and the lribal
Council is the only part of our govern-
ment that has the power to reinstate
them," Ms. Finley said.
Gunman
robs man
on turnpike
By the Herald Staff
An Edmond man reported he had
been robbed at gunpoint of $152 on
the Turner Turnpike early Monday
morning.
Mark Cowan told Creek County
deputies that he was fixing a flat west
of Bristow when two black males
stopped to offer assistance.
He said one of the suspects then
pulled a revolver believed to be a .357
and demanded Cowan's money and
credit cards.
Cowan said the two were driving a
late 1970s model Chevrolet pickup
and were between the ages of IS to
25.
The victim said he walked seven
miles to a toll gate to get help.
Two men held
for separate
violence cases
By the Herald Staff
Two Creek County men were
arrested of violation of the domestic
violence act in separate incidents this
weekend according to Creek County
Sheriff Department reports.
Deputies reported Saturday that
Donald R Harris Jr., 24, of Bristow
was arrested when investigating
deputies found the female victim with
red marks on her arms and hack.
Initially the call was broadcast as a
domestic conflict involving a gun
However, deputies reported the
victim stated the suspect had never
pointed the gun at her.
The second altercation occurred
early Monday at 802 N. Division
where deputies took Rodney Duncan,
30, into custody after the victim
reported the man had hit her several
time and had thrown her onto the bed.
