Cindy Morgan touts edgier sound
By LOKKIE J. QU1NNELLY
Herald Staff Writer
Christian artist Cindy Morgan’s
newest album - Listen - is touched by
sentimentalism.
Her father wrote the lyrics to the
title cut that is shooting up CCM (con-
temporary Christian music) charts
some 25 years ago and dreamed that
one day it would be recorded. Now his
daughter has done that for him.
Morgan is anything but sentimental
about her music and her faith. For the
tiny brunette who belts out a tunc with
the best of them, this is not time to be
weak-kneed about what she believes.
“Each song has its own message;
they can stand on their own,” she said

14th fall festival
turns out big hit
By LORRIE J. QUINNELLY
Herald Staff Writer
KELLYVILLE- The Creek Cou-
nty Fall Festival has been around for
years, 14 to be exact, but organizers
think the 19% event, slated Nov. 9,
will be tops.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Teresa Tut-
tle, who is helping to spearhead the
festival. “We wouldn’t do it if it
weren't fun. It looks like it’s going to
be bigger this year.”
The annual arts and crafts festival
is the sole fund-raiser for Kellyvillc’s
Christmas parade. The parade com-
mittee awards cash prizes for the best
float in the parade, Tuttle said. The
prize money is derived from booth
rentals at the festival.
Money from booth rentals also
helps to purchase candy and balloons
that Santa gives to children along the
parade route and other incidental
associated with the parade, Tuttle
said.
This year’s arts and crafts festival
will be from 9 a m. to 5 p.m. at the
Creek County Fairgrounds. Already
approximately 30 craftcrs and artisans
have scheduled to display and sell
their crafts. Booth spaces are 8-by-10-
feet and still arc available.
Admission to the arts and crafts
festival is free.
For booth information, contact Mr.

“These are the songs that the Lord has
given me, and I feel like musically,
they reflect where I am in my life.”
Gone arc the dance tunes that car-
Recording artists with the
most total record sales
marked music on her last two albums.
Morgan, who entered Christian music
singing ballads, such as “How Could I
Ask for More,” at the piano, is back at
the piano singing and doing what she
docs best. In fact, she plays the piano
herself on the album.
“It was so natural, so much fun,”
she said.
“I am by no means a great pianist.
Every time I thought about Phil Naish
and all of the great pianists out there,
it was scary for me to think about
playing on this record. On a couple of
the piano and vocal tracks, we record-
ed them live at the same time. That
can be stressful because if there’s one
mistake, you have to start all over -

and believe you me, it wasn’t a one-
take job!”
Still the title track is the one that
grabs the listener and Morgan.
Written by her father, Cova Mor-
gan, a mechanic who wrote gospel
songs for her mom to sing, it was a
song he hoped to have recorded and
published. But when record company
personnel wanted him to move to
Nashville to do it, he opted for the
family life and dropped the notion of a
musical career.
“We told him about (the song) at a
concert in Knoxville,” Morgan said in
a recent KXOJ interview. “It was real
emotional. There wasn’t a dry eye in
the house. But it was great for him."
Drug charges dropped
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A
judge dropped cocaine and heroin
charges against Scott Weiland, saying
the Stone Temple Pilots lead singer
has made progress in drug rehab.
Weiland, 28, spent about five
months at Impact Drug & Alcohol
Treatment Center and was recently
released. The charges were dropped

Poet helps honor women’s rights groups
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Poet
Maya Angclou helped honor three
grass-roots groups from around the
world for their work to improve the
lives of women.
“If their stories teach us anything,
it is that we will all win together or we
will all lose together,” Angelou said
Tuesday of three women accepting
prizes for their groups from the Unit-

The groups, based in Somalia, Peru

their respective countries: peace,
