Man dies when vehicle hits dump truck
By The Associated Press
A Vinita man died when his pickup truck struck a road crew's dump truck on
U.S. 69 south of Adair, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
The patrol said the dump truck was stopped as the crew worked on the road-
way Wednesday. An arrow hoard guided motorists to the right lane.
Troopers said William Daniel Raus, 46, went around the
arrow board and abruptly changed back into the left lane,
striking die dump truck.
Raus died at the scene. The patrol said he wasn't wearing
a seat belt.
Also Wednesday, the patrol said Eugene Zoph, 39, of Stuart died when he was
thrown from a tractor lie was using to pull a harrow. The harrow caught in a
mound of dirt, causing Zoph to be thrown from the tractor and run over by it. He
was pinned beneath a wheel.
The accident occurred on an oilfield road south of Calvin.
A Cherokee County man died in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday morning.
Troopers said Thomas Allen Bradshaw, 63, of Marble City, was killed when the
car he was driving ran off a county road and struck a tree.
Bradshaw was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.
Dry conditions feeding Florida wildfires
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Blinding smoke hampered firefighters' efforts
today to contain a blaze that has charred more than 1,000 acres in northern Flori-
da
"They really can't do much with it," said Peggy Cane, a duty officer with
Florida's Division of Forestry. "The smoke's coming right back on them.”
Although firefighters had mostly contained the blaze which has burned
about 1,050 acres midway between Gainesville and Tallahassee, the smoke inver-
sion made it difficult for them to see, Ms. Cane said.
In southwest Florida 1,400 acres in Cape Coral burned before firefighters
brought it under control during the night.

“This is what the Sapulpa Writer’s
Group is all about,” he said. "We want
to give writers in this area encourage-
ment and support."
“We're a fun-loving group." said
one of it’s members.
The group, who meets the last Fri-
day of each month at the Chamber of
Commerce, I0I East Dewey, will
meet this Friday March 26 at 3 p.m.
“There’s lots of refreshments and
encouragement," Potter said, who also
and Wilkins were arrested following a
raid at a residence south of Bristow
last year.
In Wednesday's raid, Taylor said
deputies seized glass ware and the
chemical remains indicating a recent
cook.
He said deputies also recovered a
small quantity of meth from one of the
suspects.

moved to 3 p.m. to accommodate stu-

"Just come and bring something

Cohen: It’s up to Milosevic when bombing ends
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is
ready to continue a sustained bombing campaign in
Yugoslavia, Defense Secretary William Cohen said
today, but it could end "at any time" if Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic returns to the peace
table.
Cohen said all NATO planes had returned safely
from the First day of strikes, and defense officials
discounted reports that Yugoslavia's air defenses had
hit a U.S. warplane.
"There will be more to follow, unless Mr. Milo-
sevic chooses peace," Cohen told Associated Press
Radio in an interview today. "This is going to be a
long effort."
One U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter jet, spewing
smoke, made an emergency landing today in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, next door to Yugoslavia. Army
Col. Richard Bridges, a Pentagon spokesman, said
the plane was not damaged by Yugoslav air defens-
es and, in fact, had been flying a routine deny-flight
mission over Bosnia when it developed a problem
with its hydraulic pump and made an emergency
landing today.
Nebojsa Vujovic, charges d'affaires for the
Yugoslav Embassy in Washington, said the allied
strikes had caused no serious damage to
Yugoslavia's military. "But we have civilian casual-
ties," he said on NBC's "Today" show, with 10 dead
and more than 60 wounded.
Cohen said those reports were unconfirmed and
questioned the reliability of information out of
Yugoslavia. He added, though, that civilian casual-
ties were difficult to avoid.
Despite a near-unanimous vote by the House in
support of U.S. forces participating in the mission.
Republican lawmakers voiced concern about the
U.S. strategy.
Rep J.C Watts of Oklahoma, a member of the
House Republican leadership, said today on Fox
News that lawmakers of both parties "are quite con-
cerned not knowing when we re going to get out of
there, how we're going to get out of there. I'm not as
concerned about a time-frame as I am about us
being committed to winning."
Former Republican Sen. Bob Dole, who has
served Clinton as an envoy in the Yugoslav crisis,
said the United States and NATO must be in for the
long haul. If Yugoslavia refuses to yield, Dole told
ABC News in a phone interview, "I think we con-
tinue, we make it more intense," and he added that
ground forces "have to be somewhere on the table"
if airstrikes don't work.
Clinton warned that U.S. forces faced grave risks
but indicated the assault would include no ground
troops. "I do not intend to put our troops in Kosovo
to fight a war," he said.
As U.S. and allied warplanes fought through the
night over Yugoslavia and readied for a second
round of strikes today. President Clinton took to the
airwaves Wednesday night to try to win support
from a public largely unaware of the severity of the
crisis in Kosovo, and uncertain, even, of where the
Yugoslav province is on the map

"unprecedented criminal act" that sup-
port ethnic Albanian "terrorists."
The airstrikes were NATO's first
attack on a sovereign country in the
50 years since the Western alliance
was formed.
Western officials promised further
strikes, saying the campaign would
end only when Milosevic's military
had been crippled or if he capitulated
and agreed to the peace deal already
accepted by the ethnic Albanians.
NATO Secretary-General Javier
Solana said the first phase of the
bombings likely would continue "for
several days."
■ UNITS
Continued from Page 1
"I'm not sure about that. It just
seems like it's not the right timing."
No U.S. Air Force units assigned
to Tinker and Altus Air Force Bases
were involved in the initial bombing
attacks.
Officials at the two bases said none
of their units had been alerted as part
of the operation to end aggression by
Yugoslavia's army against native
Albanians.
Tinker spokeswoman Lt. Christine
Fry said since the attacks are a NATO
operation, NATO would have to
request additional forces before any
more units are alerted to possibly
become involved.
Scores of cruise missiles and one-
ton bombs were fired at Yugoslav tar-
gets. Dozens of warplanes were used,
including six U.S. B-52 bombers and
two B-2 stealth bombers, appearing in
combat for the first time
The attack was swiftly condemned
by the Yugoslav army.
Sen. Don Nickles, R-Okla., said
"The objective is to curb the capac-
ity of Milosevic's army to repress the
Kosovo Albanians," British Foreign
Secretary Robin Cook told the British
Broadcasting Corp. "When that stops,
the military action will stop."
The Tanjug state news agency
reported that Kosovo Liberation Army
rebels "encouraged and supported by
last night's criminal activities,"
attacked government forces in Koso-
vo around Podujevo, Kosovska Mitro-
vica, Suva Rcka, Drenica and Oraho-
vac. The report could not be con-
firmed.
In the Kosovo capital, Pristina, wit-
nesses said the office of ethnic Alban-
reservations about President Clinton's
policy on the situation must now be
set aside.
"My primary concern now is with
our pilots as they conduct a dangerous
mission. I am praying for their suc-
cess and their safe return," he said.
Rep. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.,
recently returned from a fact-finding
mission to Albania and Macedonia.
"As Americans, it is difficult for us
to understand the depth of the divi-
sions in the Balkans," he said. "Our
country is only 200 years old. but the
divisions in the Balkans go back one-
thousand years.
"No military campaign will heal
the alienation that has been the source
of hundreds of years of conflict."
Rep. J.C. Watts, R-Okla., said
Congress and the American people
should support the troops in times of
crisis.
"We must keep these men and
women and their families in our
thoughts and prayers until we can
resolve this conflict and get them
back on American soil."
ian political leader Ibrahim Rugova
was vandalized. Windows and doors
were smashed and smoke drifted out
windows, indicating the office had
been burned the previous night.
Just north of the city, a tire shop
smoldered and its roof was missing
after a missile strike that missed a
nearby military barracks, the largest in
Pristina.
Witnesses saw smoke rising from a
military airfield north of Belgrade
after air raid sirens sounded at mid-
morning today in the capital, along
with the Serbian town of Kragujevac
and Pristina.
Kragujevac, a major military-
industrial center, was dark after an
explosion early today, the private
news agency Beta reported.
Belgrade was quiet, with most
shops closed and little indication of
any military attack. Schools and air-
ports also were closed.
Independent and state-run papers
in the Yugoslav capital reported the
NATO bombing killed an undeter-
mined number of women and chil-
dren, including family members of
Yugoslav Army officers living in mil-
itary buildings because they were
refugees from past wars in Bosnia and
Croatia.
The army statement did not specify
if the casualties were civilians or mil-
itary, and also added that one soldier
was missing.
