44-40
Won Earlier
Earlier this season, Fayetteville
easily defeated Sapulpa by a 20-
point margin.
For Dick Young, it was his second
straight high-scoring night as he
pumped in 19 big points. His total
would have been bigger, but he col-
lected only one tally In the first
quarter and had to spend the next
three stanzas getting the other 18
points.
A great deal of credit, however,
should go to Don Fleming, who has
flashed into good form in his last
three games. Both on offense and
defense, Fleming has shown re-
markable Improvement in recent
3ames.
Last night he pushed in 11 points
for second-highest scoring honors
for Sapulpa. and was a fast-moving
ball hawk throughout the game He
played all the way.
Eli Walker came through with
six points, and Don French and
Eugene Powshiek had two points.
►Playing but not scoring were Dale
Esmond and Leon Pritchard.
Lost On Free Throws
For Sapulpa. it was one of the
best games so far this season, and
could have been added to the win
column if they had not been over-
whelmed at the free throw line.
Sapulpans will have their last
chance to see this year's basketball
team in action Friday when the
Muskogee Roughers come visiting at
Washington auditorium.
Tuesday. Sapulpa goes to Okmul-
gee to play a make-up game can-
celled earlier this season
From then on. it's a sudden death
matter, when the Chiefs enter the
district playoffs at Sand Springs.
One loss and the season is over.

SAN FRANCISCO - UP — Julio
Mederos, who is most remem-
bered for his "bitter orange" TKO
of Harold Johnson last may. seeks
to halt the rise of Eddie Machen
Wednesday night when he boxes
the undefeated heavyweight here
in a nationally-televised, 10-round
contest.
Machen, a Sid Flanerty enter-
prise. goes into this one with only
11 professional bouts to his credit
but has won 10 by knockouts.
Cuban Julio, a substitute for
fellow-countryman Nino Valdes,
stopped Johnson in the second
round of a Philadelphia bout. A
lengthy investigation followed
when Johnson claimed he was
drugged by a "bitter orange" Just
before entering the ring.
Earlier that year, Mederos flat-
tened Roland La Starza and de-
cisively outpointed Claude Chap-
man in Boston last month. He is
a slight favorite to bring Machen’s
victory string to an end.
None of Machen's victims is too
widely-known nationally. Howard
King, who survived 10 rounds
against world light heavyweight
champion Archie Moore here Mon-
day night, reached the 10th against
Machen before Eddie lowered the
boom.
Valdes was dropped from the
card when he sustained a broken
nose. Tommy Harrison next was
eyed as a substitute but lost out
after getting KO’d by Matt John-
son of Salt Lake City.
