Austin Is Hit
By Epidemic

AUSTIN. Texas (AP) — The Travis County Medical
Society says an epidemic of diphthoiia is raging in this
Texas capital city.
The society, meeting in emergency session, said
Austin now has (10 cases of the disease, half of all the
known cases in the United Slates.
It urged an emergency mass inoculation to prevent
further spread of the disease. Dr. Maurice Hood, a
spokesman for the society, said the majority of the cases
are in the city's eastern section where the population is
mostly Negro and Mexican-Ameriean.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Vice President Humphrey
ran into a new opponent for the presidency Tuesday —
Minnie the Pooh.
Humphrey made a two-minute surprise appearance
on a children's television show shortly after lie had fin-
ished taping a TV interview in the same studio.
The master of ceremonies told Humphrey children
appearing on the show favored a different candidate for
the presidency The vice president grinned and replied:
“Oh, I’m for Winnie the Pooh. He’s one of my favorites.
He almost makes more sense than anybody."

was booed and cursed by a
hostile white audience at a
Brooklyn Jewish renter
when he appeared Tues-
day night to plead for un-
derstanding in the city’s
racially tense school cri-
sis.
The mayor spoke as the
AFL-CIO " United Federa-
tion of Teachers carried
its renewed strike against
the 1.1 million pupil public
school system into a third
day with no talks slated in
the dispute.
The walkout, the third in
less than six weeks, is
over the refusal of the lo-
cally elected governing
board of the Negro and
